Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Volcanoes pounded out eight runs on 11 hits but it wasn't enough as Salem-Keizer fell 11-8 on Thursday night in front of 2,280 at Volcanoes Stadium.
The game began with a wacky first inning in which both clubs scored four runs. Volcanoes starter Nolan Riggs (2-1, 1.88 ERA) retired the first two batters he faced but then allowed six consecutive batters to reach and four runs to cross the plate. Errors by Jose Vizcaino Jr. and C.J. Hinojosa both extended the frame and contributed to Riggs' worst inning of the season.
Salem-Keizer came right back with four runs of its own, as five of the first six batters reached to lead off the bottom of the first. Steven Duggar, Miguel Gomez, and Hinojosa all collected RBIs and the Volcanoes knotted the game up at four runs apiece.
The Hawks were back at it in the second, scoring two runs to retake the lead. Brian Carroll and Kevin Padlo both reached before Brian Mundell singled to left, scoring Carroll and advancing Padlo to third. Padlo then scored when Gomez tried to catch Mundell stealing second, pushing the Boise lead to 6-4.
Boise extended its advantage in the third, scoring two more runs and chasing Riggs from the game. Riggs gave up more earned runs (four) in his 2 1/3 innings of work than he had in his previous 21 2/3 innings (one).
The Hawks added two more in the fourth and one in the fifth to take an 11-4 lead. Boise tallied 13 hits, three walks, stole nine bases and reached on four Salem-Keizer errors in the game's first five frames.
The Volcanoes chipped away at the deficit in the fifth, tacking on a single run, and exploded for three in the sixth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Chris Shaw belted a three-run double off of the right field fence to pull Salem-Keizer within three.
The Boise bullpen held Salem-Keizer to only one hit over the final three frames, however, securing the win. Dylan Thompson (1-2, 5.12 ERA), who tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings, picked up the win for the Hawks.
Player of the Game: C.J. Hinojosa had a great night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and two RBIs. It was his first three-hit game as a professional.
Up Next: The Volcanoes wrap up their series with the Boise Hawks Friday night. Drew Leenhouts (4-1, 1.57 ERA) will start for Salem-Keizer. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
