
Boise wins 11-6 over Canadians

VANCOUVER, B.C. - Stephen Bruno, Willson Contreras, and Izaac Garsez each had three of the Boise 17-hit attack, as the Hawks lowered their Magic Number to clinch the Northwest League East Division second half title to four with an 11-6 victory over the Vancouver Canadians, before 5,157 fans at Nat Bailey Stadium.
The Hawks have a six-game lead over Yakima and a seven-game lead over Spokane with just nine games remaining in the regular-season.
After Vancouver took a 3-1 lead in the second on home runs from Art Charles and Santiago Nessy, Boise responded for four two-out runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. Marco Hernandez doubled home a run to get the Hawks within 3-2, with Bruno lining a two-run single through the right side to give Boise the lead for good. Contreras capped the inning with a bloop RBI single.
An inning later, Garsez tripled home a run and Carlos Escobar followed with a run scoring double to push the lead to 7-3, as the Hawks tied their season hit for hits in a game.
Mike Heesch got the win, tossing two shutout innings of relief, while James Pugliese went three-plus innings, striking out six.
Garsez went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI Contreras went 3-for-5 with two RBI, and Bruno 3-for-6 with two RBI in the win, as Boise improved to 5-2 on their current 11-game road trip. Vancouver had 14 hits in the loss, including a three-run inside the park home run by Matt Newman in the eighth inning.
Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. (PT) with Hayden Simpson meeting Ben White.
