BOISE, Idaho - Willson Contreras went 2-for-3 with four runs scored, helping the Boise Hawks to a 10-4 victory over the Spokane Indians, before 2,663 fans at Memorial Stadium.
With the win, the Hawks moved above the .500 mark for the first time since the last week of July in 2010 and pulled within one game of Spokane in the East Division standings.
A Brad Zapenas two-run single in the fourth inning gave the Hawks the lead for good, as Boise scored nine of their 10 runs with two outs.
The Indians took an early 2-0 lead in the second, including an RBI single from Carson Vitale, but Boise came right back, getting an two-run single from Yaniel Cabezas with a third-run scored on the play due to a Spokane error. The visitors would tie the game in the third on a Brett Nicholas RBI single, but would strand two men on in scoring position.
Leading 6-4 in the seventh, the Hawks would break the game open, as Contreras gapped a two-run triple, with Wes Darvill and Cabezas following with run-scoring doubles.
Hector Mayora went three solid innings, allowing just two hits, to pick up his first win. Cabezas went 2-for-4, ending an 0-for-18 slump, with Darvill notching a three-hit night. Trever Adams went 3-for-4 in the loss for Spokane.
Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m., as Luis Liria starts for Boise, opposite John Kukuruda.
