BlueClaws Take Down Power 9-4

CHARLESTON, WV - The Lakewood BlueClaws (1-0) jumped out of the gate in a hurry and downed the West Virginia Power (0-1) 9-4, in the opener of the second half, Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park. The win marks just the second for the Blueclaws this season against the Power.

With the game tied at 4-4 in the fifth, the BlueClaws finally staked themselves to a lead for good. Art Charles worked a one-out walk and was bounced to second on a Willie Carmona single. Charles moved to third on a fly out to center off the bat of Larry Greene, Jr. and scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by the pitcher.

The Claws picked up four insurance runs over the final four innings. In the sixth on an RBI groundout by Mitch Walding, in the sixth, that scored Alejandro Villalobos from third. In the eighth it was Roman Quinn that plated an extra run on an RBI ground out.

The final two runs were scored in the ninth. Charles and Carmona hit back-to-back doubles to make it 8-4. Two batters later, Chace Numata pushed home Carmona two batters later with a sacrifice fly to center and capped the scoring at 9-4.

Jeb Stefan, Luis Paulino, and Delvi Francisco combined to throw five and one-third innings of scoreless relief and locked down the victory.

The BlueClaws jumped out of the gate and began the second-half with a pair of runs in the first inning of the first game. Roman Quinn picked up a single and stole second in his first tripe to the plate. Brian Pointer doubled down the line in right and Quinn scored to give the BlueClaws the early 1-0 advantage.

Walding singled Pointer to third, but Pointer was erased when he tried to score on a tapper back to the pitcher off the bat of Charles. Carmona doubled the advantage with a sacrifice fly to left that plated Walding and upped the lead to 2-0.

The Power bounced back in the third inning with a pair of their own runs. The first three batters reached on a walk and two singles against Kevin Walter. Dilson Herrera hit a sacrifice fly that scored Francisco Diaz and Walker Gourley followed with a game tying single.

With the game tied at two in the fourth, it was West Virginia's Clay Holmes that pitched his way into a bases loaded jam with nobody out. Numata grounded into a 3-6 fielder's choice that put the Claws up 3-2. After a Holmes pitch hit Carlos Tocci to load the bases, the righty tagged Villalobos square in the back with a fastball and gave Lakewood the 4-2 lead.

The Power jumped right back off the mat in the bottom half of the frame and tied it up with a pair. Walter walked the leadoff man Max Moroff, he then stole second and was moved to third on a ground out to the right side.

Two batters later it was Jonathan Schwind that stroked an RBI single to left that pulled the Power within one. The leadoff man Barrett Barnes followed with a double to right that scored Schwind and tied the game at 4-4. Walter walked the next hitter, Herrera, and his outing was over and he turned it over to Stefan.

Walter completed three and two-thirds innings in his fourth outing this season. The righty allowed four runs on seven hits, he walked three and struck out one. Stefan (2-4) earned the win in relief with two and one-third scoreless innings.

Holmes did not factor into the decision, but allowed four runs, all earned, on five hits, three walks and a strikeout in three and one-third innings. Clario Perez gave up the go-ahead runs for the Claws and suffered the loss. Perez (0-1) allowed two unearned runs on two hits, a walk and a strikeout.

The Lakewood BlueClaws and the West Virginia Power will get set and do battle in game two of the four-game set Friday night at 7:05PM. The BlueClaws will send RHP Jonathan Musser (1-2, 4.70) to the hill against West Virginia's RHP John Kuchno (3-3, 4.47).
