THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia lost on Sunday at Greensboro by a 7-5 final. Eric Wood hit a Grand slam in the top of the third inning to give the Power a 4-1 lead after two and a half, but the Hoppers plated four in the bottom of the third to regain the lead. West Virginia evened the score in the fifth, but Greensboro scored twice against Joely Rodriguez in the bottom of the inning to take the lead back for good. Rodriguez took the loss in his final South Atlantic League start. Barrett Barnes chipped in two hits in the first half finale.
STARS SHINE ON SHORE: The South Atlantic LeagueÂfs Northern All-Stars, buoyed by six Power players, defeated the Southern All-Stars 2-1 Tuesday night in Lakewood. Dilson Herrera scored a run by stealing home, Stetson Allie went 1-2 with a single in the third inning, and Walker Gourley hit safely in his only at bat in the sixth. Orlando Castro started the game and pitched one inning, allowing a solo home run. Tyler Glasnow and Josh Bell did not play in a game that lasted seven innings after a two hour and 51 minute rain delay.
BRING TO A BOIL: The Power and BlueClaws will meet eight times over the next 11 days. West Virginia now holds a 61-59 lead in the all-time series, having won seven of eight meetings in the first half. The Power are 36-34 at home in this series and have split 50 games at FirstEnergy Park. These clubs will meet again in Lakewood Township to start a four game series next Thursday.
BRADENTON BOUND: The Pirates promoted three Power players to Bradenton during the South Atlantic League All-Star break. Joely Rodriguez was promoted on Monday after going 5-5 for West Virginia with an ERA of 2.72 over 72 and two-thirds innings spanning 14 starts. On Wednesday, All-Stars Stetson Allie and Orlando Castro were promoted to the Marauders roster. Allie hit .324 for the Power with 17 home runs and 61 runs batted in while Castro was 7-4 with a team-best 1.93 ERA after 13 starts.
ROSTER REINFORCEMENTS: To fill the void left by mid-season promotions, Pittsburgh advanced three players from the Jamestown Jammers roster. Luis Heredia, Clario Perez, and Jordan Steranka were each promoted this week. Heredia, the number three prospect in the Pirates system according to Baseball America, was signed by the Pirates in 2010 and pitched exclusively for State College last season, going 4-2 with a 2.71 ERA over 14 starts. Perez split time between the Power and Spikes roster in 2012, going 1-1 over 16 games for West Virginia with a 5.84 ERA. Steranka was drafted in the 21st round last summer from Penn State and did not play professionally after signing.
DUKE TAKE TWO: Earlier today, Pittsburgh recalled Duke Welker to itsÂf Major League roster. The former Power pitcher was also recalled on May 8, but never made his Major League debut. Once Welker appears in a game, he will become the 34th player to don a Power jersey and play in the Majors.
PROMO UPDATE- JULY 4- The Power will host the Lexington Legends on July 4 at 6:05 pm. The game will be followed by a fireworks show and a concert by the Davisson Brothers Band.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia was 23-47 at the break last year before going 38-32 in the second half... Dilson Herrera has West VirginiaÂfs longest current hitting streak at six straight games entering play tonight... Jason Creasy will enter the Power rotation as the fifth starter and pitch MondayÂfs opener against Hagerstown... Jordan Steranka will make his professional debut tonight against Lakewood... At the time of their promotion, Orlando Castro and Joely Rodriguez ranked first and third in the league in innings pitched.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Jason Grilli blew his first save of the season as the Pirates lost to Reds 2-1 in 13 innings. Pittsburgh and Cincinnati concluded their four-game series with a 1:05 pm game today... Indianapolis swept Norfolk in a doubleheader 8-1 and 5-3 to win their 48th and 49th games of the season... Altoona scored three runs in the seventh to defeat New Hampshire 5-2... Bradenton lost to Jupiter 3-2... Jamestown fell to Mahoning Valley 7-6. The Jammers scored six runs in the fourth, but the Scrappers scored a run in every inning after the fourth to earn the win.
