Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
Lakewood, NJâ Carlos Rodriguez collected four hits and knocked in four runs and Cory Schultz provided shutout relief over 3 2/3 innings to carry Lakewood past Hagerstown 15-6 Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park. The BlueClaws have taken the first two games of the three-game series to improve to 13-14 in the second half and 44-50 overall, while the Suns slumped to 10-17 in the second half and 38-56 overall. The BlueClaws have won nine of the 14 games played between the two teams this season.
Rodriguez delivered a two-run, bases loaded single in the fifth to put the BlueClaws ahead to stay at 6-5. Michael Bourn drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run to make it 7-5 before Moran doubled to right field to clear the bases and cap a six-run inning that extended the lead to 10-5. Moran and Rodriguez both had run-scoring hits in a three-run eighth inning rally that finished the scoring, as the BlueClaws matched their highest scoring output of the season set on July 10 in a 15-6 victory at Lexington.
BlueClaws starter Joe Wilson was taken out of the game after walking Brian Munhall to load the bases with one out in the third inning. Schultz came into the game and gave up a sacrifice fly to Tim Hutting that scored Mike Wagner to put the Suns on top 5-4 and fanned Johany Abreu for the final out of the inning. Schultz then pitched scoreless relief through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and struck out four during his appearance to earn his third win of the season. Wilson was charged with five runs, four earned, on four hits and five walks in his first start since July 10. The southpaw had missed his last scheduled turn because of shoulder soreness and was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day. Brad Overton yielded a run on one hit over three innings to earn his first save since joining the BlueClaws.
Randy Ruiz collected three hits in four at-bats, including a solo home run, and scored four times to match a franchise record set earlier in the year by Jake Blalock and Bourn. He has hit safely in six straight games, while Bourn extended his hitting streak to seven with two hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Each hitter knocked in at least one run except for Tim Moss, who finished with two singles, two walks and a run scored. Lakewood picked up 19 hits to match a season best set on June 8 in a 13-3 win at Lake County.
The BlueClaws wrap up their three-game set with Hagerstown Friday night, brought to you by Commerce Bank at 7:05 p.m. Toyota World of Lakewood/Scion World of Lakewood presents another post-game fireworks show, as well.
