Braves Dominate 'Dogs

Charleston, SC- Rome's offense produced a season-high 18 runs and 22 hits and limited the RiverDogs to just two base hits as the Braves captured the rubber game of the three game series, 18-1 Thursday in front of 4,827 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs (55-40 overall, 15-11 second half) have now been outscored 39-2 in their last three Thursday night games, all at Riley Park. Rome (54-42, 14-12) has won all four series and nine of the twelve meetings between the two teams this season.

Diory Hernandez had three hits and drove in a career-high six runs in the contest. All nine of the Braves starters had at least one hit and scored at least one run.

Carlos Guzman, who was 3-for-3 Wednesday with a pair of homers, went 4-for-5 Thursday with another round-tripper, his tenth of the season. He and Miguel Bernard homered against RiverDogs starter Joe Little (0-1) in the top of the fourth inning as the Braves took a 5-0 lead.

Elliot Johnson's RBI double off Rome starter Charlie Morton in the bottom of the third inning accounted for the RiverDogs only run of the night. Morton struggled with his control, walking six men in four innings. He was removed from the game after the fourth and did not factor in the decision.

Hernandez' bases-clearing double in the top of the fifth inning scored three put the game out of reach, extending the Braves lead to 9-1. The Braves went on to score seven times in the top of the eighth inning, registering eight hits against RiverDogs reliever Calvin Carpenter. Rome reliever Jose Ascanio (3-0) retired all nine men he faced to earn the victory.

Bernard and Guzman each drove in three runs, and Josh Burrus, Martin Prado and Jamie Hemmingway each had three hits. All three of Hemmingway's hits were doubles.

RiverDogs catcher Brent Speigner had the only other hit for Charleston, an eighth inning single. He also pitched the ninth inning, allowing one run in his second relief appearance of the year.

The RiverDogs move on to face the Savannah Sand Gnats in a four-game series beginning with a doubleheader Friday at Riley Park. Josh Kranawetter (2-1) will pitch Game 1 for Charleston against Savannah right-hander Armando Galarraga (4-4). In Game 2, RiverDogs right-hander Brian Bulger (7-5) is expected to pitch against Sand Gnats southpaw Brett Nyquist (3-1). The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 6:05 p.m. with Sprint Friday Night Fireworks to follow Game 2.
