Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - It was an exciting night at FirstEnergy Park as the Lakewood BlueClaws returned home from a 5-3 road trip to a crowd of 8,217 on Friday night to face the Hagerstown Suns. Bryce Harper, who was the top pick in last June's MLB Amateur Draft by the Washington Nationals, was in town and started in Right Field for the Suns. He came into the game leading the South Atlantic League in Batting Average at .395, had 30 RBI's, and 8 HR's. Everyone was excited to see Harper play, and Friday night it didn't quite live up to some peoples expectations. He finished the game 1-4 with an infield single and was caught stealing. The crowd of 8,217 was the 101st scorwd of over 8,000 the BlueClaws have welcomed to FirstEnergy Park since their Inaugural Season of 2001.
Jesse Biddle, the Philadelphia Phillies 1st Round pick last June at 27th overall, got the start for Lakewood and pitched well but got the loss going 6 innings, allowing 6 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks, and striking out 6. Biddle pitched a perfect 1st inning including striking out Harper looking to end the inning, and got the first batter out in the 4th. Then he ran into trouble. Back-to-back singles followed by a walk to Wade Moore loaded the bases with one out. Mills Rogers hit a Sac Fly to CF to score Randolph Oduber from 3rd and make it 1-0 Hagerstown. Then Michael Taylor delivered the biggest hit of the game with a 2 Out double that scored 2 and made it 3-0 Suns. Blake Kelso then singled home Taylor making it 4-0 Hagerstown before the inning was finally brought to an end. That was all the offense Hagerstown needed on the night, and that's all they got, as the held on to win 4-3. Paul Applebee got the win to move to 3-1 on 2 innings of 1 hit, 1 run work. Applebee relieved Hagerstown SP AJ Cole after Cole threw 4 innings, allowed 2 hits and 1 run.
Lakewood scored 1 run in the 3rd on Edgar Duran RBI single, 1 run in the 6th on Anthony Hewitt's ground out to short, and 1 more in the 7th on Domingo Santana's lead-off Inside the Park Home Run. They were just unable to push across that final tying run after they got runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out in the 7th, and they fell by a final of 4-3. Santana's Inside-the-Park homer was the first such of his career, and the 4th HR total he has hit this season. It was the first Inside-the-Park HR by a BlueClaw since Jiwan James hit one against Greensboro on August 19 last year. Edgar Duran was the only BlueClaw with more than one hit in the game as he went 2-4 with 2 Doubles and an RBI.
Saturday the two teams will be back at it for Game 2 of the 4 game series as Lakewood will trot out RHP Garett Claypool (0-1, 3.00 ERA) to the mound, and he will be opposed by Hagerstown LHP Robbie Ray (0-0, 0.00 ERA) who is making just his 2nd start of the year. First Pitch is scheduled for 4:05 pm on Saturday.
