Grasshoppers Score Early To Drop Shorebirds 6-3

Salisbury, Md. - The Greensboro Grasshoppers (19-15) jumped to an early lead and held on for a 6-3 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds (21-14) on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in front of 5,466 fans.

The Greensboro Grasshoppers sprinted to an early lead in the second inning. Brian McConkey led off with a walk. Then, Marcell Ozuna ripped a double to the left-center field wall to score McConkey from first. Aaron Dudley followed with a single. Later in the inning, Dan Black hit a two-run single to give the Grasshoppers a 3-0 lead.

In the third, the Grasshoppers added two more runs. With two aboard, Ozuna hit a triple to give the ‘Hoppers a 5-0 lead. Greensboro tacked on another run in the fifth inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly RBI by Brian McConkey.

The Shorebirds scored their first run of the night in the sixth inning. Kipp Schutz singled to start the inning. Later in the inning, Mychal Givens singled through the right side of the infield to score Schutz.

Kipp Schutz blasted his fourth home run of the season in the seventh inning to trim the deficit to three runs. The Shorebirds notched just one hit between the eighth and ninth innings.

Greensboro starter Robert Morey earned the win in six innings. He allowed eight hits but just one run. Delmarva starter Scott Copeland was tagged with the loss in six innings. He surrendered seven hits and six runs.

Shorebirds reliever Jason Gurka tossed three scoreless innings. Gurka allowed just one hit. The Shorebirds bullpen has not allowed a run in 9.2 consecutive innings.

The Shorebirds and Grasshoppers will square off in game two of the series on Saturday, May 14 at 7:05 p.m. LHP Tim Berry is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.

Mychal Givens recorded his second straight multi-hit game for Delmarva. He now has six hits in his last eight at-bats.
