
Blueclaws End Power Winning Streak

Charleston, WV (May 18, 2009) - The Lakewood BlueClaws scored multiple runs in three innings of Monday night's game at Appalachian Power Park and ended West Virginia's four game winning streak with a 9-2 victory in the opening game of the series.
Sebastian Valle smashed a two-run homer off the scoreboard in left field to give the BlueClaws an early lead in the top of the first. Anthony Gose tripled in Harold Garcia in the third to give Lakewood a 3-0 lead. The BlueClaws plated four runs with two outs in the fifth inning to pull away. Troy Hanzawa doubled in the first two runs and Jeremy Hamilton smacked a two-run homer to complete the inning.
Lakewood plated their final two runs in the top of the sixth. Travis D'Arnaud's sacrifice fly scored Garcia and Travis Mattair doubled in Gose to give the BlueClaws a 9-0 lead. Chase D'Arnaud singled in Robbie Grossman in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Power on the board, and Bobby Spain belted a solo homerun in the ninth, his second of the year.
Tyler Cloyd (4-2) allowed just a run on seven hits over seven innings and struck out eight in a winning effort. Maurice Bankston (1-4) was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven runs on seven hits over five innings of work. Ryan Kelly and Alan Knotts combined to retire the final 10 Lakewood batters in a row.
West Virginia fell to 13-24 after the loss, and the BlueClaws improved to 21-15 with the win. Grossman and D'Arnaud both turned in two-hit performances for the Power. The top of the order went 5-for-12. The multi-hit game was D'Arnaud's 12th of the season.
West Virginia will continue the four game series with the Lakewood BlueClaws at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday night. Right hander Duke Welker (0-4, 4.64) will start for the Power and the BlueClaws will counter with right hander Jason Knapp (2-3, 3.82). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
