BlueClaws Drop 15-Inning Heart-Breaker 4-3
April 11, 2017 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - Sheldon Neuse's game-winning RBI double in the 15th inning gave Hagerstown a 4-3 win over the BlueClaws on Tuesday night at Municipal Stadium.
Neuse, who had the go-ahead RBI single in the Suns' win on Monday, brought home Juan Soto who drew a lead-off walk from losing pitcher Harold Arauz (0-1).
Hagerstown (4-2) has taken the first two games of the four-game series from the BlueClaws (4-2), who have dropped two straight after a 4-0 start to the season.
Jordan Mills (1-0), who threw a scoreless 15th, was the winning pitcher.
The BlueClaws forced the 10th with a run in the ninth off closer Mick Van Vossen. David Martinelli reached on an error and was at third with Carlos Duran at first. With one out, Daniel Brito hit a ground ball to first base, but instead of throwing to second, first baseman Aldrern Corredor stepped on the bag and when Duran was tagged out in a run down, Martinelli had scored the tying run.
Each team scored in the first inning, with Mickey Moniak's RBI groundout giving the BlueClaws and early lead and the Suns tying the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout by Sheldon Neuse.
Lakewood took a 2-1 lead in the third on a SAC fly by Arquimedes Gamboa after they loaded the bases with nobody out.
BlueClaws starter Bailey Falter exited after throwing five innings of one run ball with two strikeouts and no walks.
The Suns took the lead with two runs in the sixth inning off Felix Paulino. With the bases loaded and one out, Lakewood nearly turned a 5-4-3 double play on a Nick Banks grounder, but Banks beat Daniel Brito's throw to first, which tied the game. The next batter, Corredor, singled to left to bring home Sheldon Neuse and give the Suns a 3-2 lead.
Hagerstown starter Sterling Sharp gave up two runs in five innings.
Trevor Bettencourt threw three scoreless innings in relief with five strikeouts before Arauz came on in the 14th inning.
Daniel Brito had three hits in the loss for the BlueClaws. He has hit safely in all six BlueClaws games so far this year.
It was the longest BlueClaws game since an 18-inning win over Hickory on August 5, 2015.
The series in Hagerstown wraps up on Wednesday at 6:05 pm. LHP JoJo Romero (0-0) stats for Lakewood opposite LHP Tyler Watson (0-1).
