RiverDogs Come Back Again, Walk-Off to Win Fourth in a Row

April 11, 2017 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - For the second time in four days, the Charleston RiveDogs walked off in front of a packed house at The Joe. 5,071 fans and their dogs turned out to watch a back and forth nail biter as the RiverDogs overcame a three-run sixth inning deficit, and Diego Castillo scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the ninth to carry Charleston to their fourth win in a row at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Monday night.

Augusta (0-5) got on the board first in the top of the second as Ryan Kirby got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Jacob Heyward followed with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kelvin Beltre brought in two runs with a roped double to right field. Two batters later, GreenJackets catcher Will Albertson rolled a grounder to short that Castillo fired to the plate, but Beltre slid in to score in time, making it 3-0 Augusta.

The RiverDogs (4-1) scored a pair in the bottom of the inning. Isiah Gilliam (RF) started things off with a single to right field. Catcher Donny Sands followed with a single to center putting runners on first and second. With third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera batting, Caleb Baragar threw a wild pitch to advance Sands and Gilliam up a base. Cabrera hit a fly ball into centerfield for the first out of the inning to score Gilliam, making it 3-1. Sands was caught dead to rights in a rundown on the same play, but knocked the ball free from third baseman Tyler Brown attempting to tag him out, allowing Molina to hit a subsequent fly ball to left field that scored Sands to bring the RiverDogs within one.

After being touched up in the second, RiverDogs starter Nick Nelson struck out the side in third and settled in. Charleston took the lead in the bottom half, scoring a pair of runs on a crucial error by Augusta. After the RiverDogs loaded up the bases with two outs, a routine pop out to first off the bat of Cabrera was dropped by first baseman Ryan Kirby, leading to two RiverDogs runs and a 4-3 Charleston advantage.

As fast as Charleston grabbed the lead, Augusta would tie it back up in the fourth on an RBI ground out from Will Albertson. The lead changed back into Charleston's favor in the bottom of the inning as they answered with a Castillo RBI bounce out.

David Sosebee came in as relief for Nick Nelson in the fifth, striking out two. In the sixth, the GreenJackets got to the former Georgia Bulldog. Kirby reached on a dropped third strike that got away from Sands on a wild pitch. Heyward followed with a single. Beltre followed with a sharp ground ball down the first base line but gloved by Brandon Wagner for the first out and advancing the runners. A wild pitch scored Kirby and a pair of hits scored Brown and Heyward. Anthony Marks hit a sac bunt to score the GreenJackets' fourth run of the game making it 8-5.

For the third time in four nights, the RiverDogs overcame a late deficit with a big inning, scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth to tie it up. Molina cranked a double to left field to lead off the frame. After Wagner struck out, Hoy Jun Park stroked a single into right to drive in Molina. Castillo followed with an opposite field knock to chase Augusta reliever Nolan Riggs, and two batters later Angel Aguilar brought home two on a line drive single to left that made it an 8-8 ballgame.

The game stayed tied until the ninth when Cesar Yanez (0-1, 8.10) stepped on the mound for the ninth and walked the bases full of RiverDogs without recording an out before sailing a wild pitch to the backstop that scored Castillo and gave Charleston their fourth consecutive victory.

Lefty Trevor Lane (2-0, 0.00) was superb out of the pen, allowing just one hit through 3.2 innings with two strikeouts to pick up his second win in as many outings.
