Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

GREENSBORO, NC - In an early pitchers' duel, Greensboro's Michael King outgunned Delmarva's Alex Wells as the Grasshoppers beat the Shorebirds 4-1 on Monday night at First National Bank Field.

King (1-0) tied the Shorebirds up in knots for five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out nine on just 71 pitches. Wells (0-1) didn't fare poorly in his first SAL start, allowing two runs on six hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out six in the loss. Kyle Keller locked down his second save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Scoreless in the bottom of the second, Branden Berry broke the ice to smithereens with a towering home run to left center that nearly left the stadium. Berry's first dinger of the year gave the Grasshoppers an early 1-0 cushion.

Greensboro added one in the bottom of the fourth as Rony Cabrera and Corey Bird laced back-to-back two-out doubles.

Delmarva cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth inning. Ryan McKenna led off with a single and went to third on a hit-and-run two-out single by Collin Woody. Chris Clare then rolled a base hit through the hole on the left side, scoring McKenna to break up the shutout and make it 2-1.

The Grasshoppers got the insurance they needed in the bottom of the seventh. Garis Lara and Aaron Knapp led off with back-to-back walks. Justin Twine then dropped a bunt between the mound and third base line; Delmarva pitcher Jake Bray fielded and tried for the force at third, but his throw skidded under Woody's glove and away, allowing Lara to score. Another sac bunt moved the runners up to second and third, then after a strikeout, pitching change, and walk, pinch-hitter Colby Lusignan slashed a single to right to score one and give the game its final margin.

Ben Meyer capped three solid innings in relief with a perfect ninth before handing the baton to Keller for the spotless ninth.

Daniel Fajardo finished 2-for-3 to lead the Shorebirds, who only managed six hits - all singles - on the night.

Seven Grasshoppers accounted for their seven hits with Berry, Bird, and Cabrera going for extra bases.

The Shorebirds will look to draw even in game two of three against the Grasshoppers on Tuesday night. Opening Day starter Lucas Humpal (0-0, 0.00) gets the nod for Delmarva against Greensboro's Jordon Holloway (0-0, 10.80). First pitch from First National Bank Field is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports AM 960 and the MiLB First Pitch app begins at 6:45 p.m. with Will DeBoer on the call.
