Early Woes Doom Drive in 12-4 Loss to Legends

Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive got into an early hole on Monday night at Fluor Field and couldn't get out of it, dropping a 12-4 contest to the Lexington Legends in the series opener between the two teams.

Monday's game featured the season debut of Jay Groome, the 12th overall draft pick by the Red Sox last summer and the Drive's top prospect entering the season, but the Legends (2-3) tagged Groome (0-1) for nine runs on seven hits and three walks in just one and a third innings.

An infield single by Emmanuel Rivera gave the Legends an early 1-0 lead in the first, and Manny Olloque followed with a grand slam over the wall in left-center.

Tyler Hill smacked a solo homer in the bottom of the first for the Drive (3-2), but the Legends responded with four more runs in the second before Groome exited the game after 53 pitches.

The rest of the Drive offense on Monday came in the fourth inning when Ryan Scott continued his hot hitting with a three-run homer to right-center, his third long ball of the young season.

Lexington starter Andre Davis (1-0) punched out eight hitters over six innings to get the victory.

The Greenville bullpen did admirable work in holding the Legends down for the rest of the game. Robby Sexton worked five and two-third innings and allowed just two earned runs in his first appearance, while Dakota Smith, also pitching in his first game of the year, hurled two scoreless frames.

Kort Peterson went 4-4 to lead the Legends offensively, while Rivera went 3-5 with four RBI.

Game two of the three-game series begins at 7:05 PM on Tuesday at Fluor Field. The pitching matchup features Drive right-hander Shaun Anderson (0-0, 1.93) against Legends right-hander Nolan Watson (0-0, 0.00).

The Drive will host Fluor in the Community Night on Tuesday at Fluor Field while also welcoming St. Anthony's Catholic School for the game. Tickets can be purchased at the Main Street Box Office, at (864) 240-4528
