Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
SALISBURY, MD - For the second straight ballgame, the bats came alive for the Lakewood BlueClaws as they belted out 16 hits and nine runs in a 9-3 win against the Delmarva Shorebirds on Friday night.
The BlueClaws (34-31) got on the board in the first inning for the second game in a row as they took a 1-0 lead. However the big inning occurred in the third as they strung together five hits and an error to score four runs, all with two outs. In the inning, Jim Murphy continued a streak of four consecutive games with an RBI-double.
In a 5-0 ballgame, Matthew Way, who had a no-hitter through 5.1 innings allowed a hit by pitch, his first hit allowed and a walk, loading the bases with two outs before being lifted. Way (4-1) pitched very well in his tune-up for the BlueClaws first playoff game on September 9th against the Kannapolis Intimidators.
With the bases loaded, Luke Wertz came on and allowed a walk and a single, scoring three runs combined all charged to Way to make it a 5-3 ballgame. Wertz would settle to get a strikeout to end the inning and work two more scoreless innings in his debut as a BlueClaw. Eryk McConnell pitched a scoreless ninth.
In a 5-3 game the BlueClaws added two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to extend their lead to 9-3. The middle of the order was tremendous for the BlueClaws as Murphy reached in all five plate appearances going 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Travis d'Arnaud was 4-for-5 with his lone putout being a shot to the warning track.
The BlueClaws had 12 hits on Thursday with eight runs, and the 16 hits on Friday ties a season high for the BlueClaws this season. This hitting is coming on the heels of nearly a month-long scoring drought.
Oliver Drake (8-9) started for the Shorebirds (8-9) and lasted into the seventh despite allowing 11 hits and seven runs, five earned.
The BlueClaws have won the first two games of this final five-game series of the season and will play game three on Saturday night at 7:05 pm. The game will be the BlueClaws debut for Austin Hyatt (-) who has been outstanding for the Williamsport Crosscutters and he will be opposed by lefty Chris Salberg (3-3).
