Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD -- A perfect day at the dish by designated hitter Tyler Moore and a very imperfect inning by the pitching staff of the Lake County Captains (38-29) combined to catapult the Hagerstown Suns (24-40) to a 9-4 victory at Municipal Stadium on Friday night.

The Suns broke open a scoreless pitcher's duel with six runs in the bottom of the fourth, ignited by a leadoff double from Moore, who went three-for-three on the evening and walked twice. Moore's hit was followed by a walk to right fielder J.R. Higley, and first baseman Brett Newsome stepped to the plate next for just his second at-bat as a Sun.

Fresh off winning the Gulf Coast League championship a day earlier as a member of the GCL Nationals, Newsome delivered a double off the wall in left to plate both baserunners and give Hagerstown the lead for good.

From there, the Lake County pitching staff turned the inning into a laugher, as starter Trey Haley (4-8) uncorked two wild pitches and issued a walk to put Hagerstown on top, 3-0, and earn an early exit from the game. Francisco Jimenez relieved Haley, and one-upped his predecessor with a string of three walks -- one to Moore with the bases loaded -- and two run-scoring wild pitches that gave the Suns a 6-0 lead.

The Captains bounced back with four unearned runs in the top of the fifth against Hagerstown starter Juan Jaime, who was chased from the game one out shy of qualifying for the win. Jaime did not allow an earned run over four and two thirds innings of work, striking out six batters.

Right-handed reliever Chris Lugo (5-2) replaced Jaime and earned the victory with three and a third innings of shutout ball.

The Hagerstown offense provided Lugo with an insurance run in the seventh, when Higley shot a double off the centerfield wall to plate Moore, who had walked. The Suns then put the game away with a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth, with catcher Travis Reagan and Moore putting together consecutive run-scoring hits for a 9-4 Hagerstown lead.

The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
