Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Intimidators inability to find the strikezone cost them on Friday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, as Hickory took a 2-1, 10-inning win.

Drew O'Neil walked five batters in two innings, including the leadoff man in the 10th. Vinny DiFazio scored in controversial fashion on Matt West's two out RBI single to score the game winning run.

West put a line drive to center off of O'Neil (4-1) to seemingly plate DiFazio from second. However, Eric Fry overturned second base and was tagged out to end the inning. Home plate umpire Blake Davis ruled that DiFazio crossed home plate first, giving Hickory their first lead of the game.

Kannapolis had taken an early advantage behind Stephen Sauer, who was looking for his first win since mid-July. Sauer worked one of his best starts of the year, keeping the Crawdads off the board for six innings. The right-hander allowed only two hits and struck out seven without walking a batter.

The Intimidators had offensive troubles of their own against starter Wilfredo Boscan, but did get a run on Dan Black's fifth inning RBI single. Boscan would have taken loss if Kannapolis' ‘pen had held the lead, despite surrendering just four hits in six innings.

But Leroy Hunt could not keep the ‘Dads off the board, as the reliever allowed a run on two hits and a walk. It was the walk that was most damaging, as it came to leadoff the eighth. Ed Koncel eventually scored the tying run on an O'Neill wild pitch.
