Frederick Keys News Release
Wilmington, Del. -The Wilmington Blue Rocks earned a 7-5 weather-shortened win over the Frederick Keys on Thursday night at Frawley Stadium after rain stopped play with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Trailing 5-0 after the first stanza, the Blue Rocks scored seven unanswered runs, including four in the fifth inning. With the loss, the orange and black drop to three games behind Wilmington in the CL North standings.
In the fifth, the Blue Crew scored four times with two outs. With a runner aboard at first, Cody Stubbs singled to right to put runners at the corners for Frank Schwindel. Owner of an RBI double the inning prior, the Rocks five-hole batter doubled to left to plate a pair and pull Wilmington within a run.
That ended the night for Keys starter David Hess, as Keys manager Orlando Gomez called in Austin Urban from the bullpen to face Dexter Kjerstad. On his 1-1 pitch, Urban misfired, and Kjerstad homered over the leftfield wall to give Wilmington the lead for good. Hess allowed five runs on five hits over 4.2 innings in a no-decision. He walked three and struck out five.
After Kjerstad's homer, Urban (0-3) would be ejected by home plate umpire Erich Bacchus after the right-hander's next pitch grazed the jersey of Jack Lopez. Dylan Rheault would pickoff Lopez to end the inning, before giving up a run in the sixth on a fielder's choice, sac-bunt, walk and wild pitch. Urban received the loss, after allowing the go-ahead run to score.
Wilmington's starter, Eric Skoglund (4-2) earned the win despite tying his career-high with five runs allowed. He scattered five hits, walked one and struck out three. Estarlin Cordero earned the save, after striking out Logan Uxa in the seventh, the final out recorded before the rains came.
All five runs Skoglund allowed came in the first inning. Josh Hart reached on a drag bunt to open the game, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Cam Gallagher. A walk and a hit-by-pitch then loaded the bases for Chance Sisco who singled in Hart. One batter later, Brenden Webb provided the inning's big blow with a grand slam to right to make it 5-0 Keys. It was the first grand slam by a Frederick player in 2015.
The Keys and the Blue Rocks continue their series on Friday night from the Delaware Riverfront. Lefty Luis Gonzalez (3-4, 8.79) makes the start for the Keys and will be opposed by Wilmington right-hander Jakob Junis (2-4, 4.05). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
