Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
WHO KNEW?: Tony Wolters had struggled coming into Wednesday's ballgame. The Carolina Mudcats second baseman, however, played an integral role in a 5-2 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks at Frawley Stadium.
TONY TIME: Wolters had three hits in his last 24 at-bats coming into Wednesday. The slump was busted when delivered RBI base hits in the fifth, seventh, and ninth innings. Those knocks tied the game, gave them a lead, and added an insurance marker, respectively. That last two both came with two outs on the board. Even with his struggles, Wolters' 23 RBIs are good for fourth on the MudTribe.
SIMPSON SIR, SECTOR 7G: The Blue Rocks had not allowed a home run in eight straight games since May 29 until Wednesday night when Carlos Moncrief took Tyler Sample deep in the second inning. That snapped the longest run by Wilmington pitching without allowing a homer since the 2010 squad went a dozen without a dinger from June 30-July 12 that season. Wilmington now owns a 2.80 ERA at Frawley Stadium with just 14 home runs allowed. On the road, the ERA shoots up to 3.97 and the home run total nearly doubles to 24.
DUBIOUS DISTINCTION: The home run hit by Moncrief in the second was the ninth served up by Sample this year. That mark is tied for first in the Carolina League along with Matt Heidenreich of Winston-Salem.
LOOK KIDS - BIG BEN, PARLIAMENT: For the 22nd time this season, Jansen Visconti and Rich Gonzalez combined to umpire a game involving the Rocks. They have arbitrated 38% of Wilmington's games on the year.
INDIVISIBLE: The Rocks stand 1.5 games of first-place Lynchburg in the Northern Division after the Hillcats snapped their eight-game losing streak last night. However, Wilmington has no meetings with the Hillcats until the second half. In fact, Wilmington's final 12 games of the half will pit it against Southern Division squads. Entering today, the North has a composite record of 106-123 (.463) while the South stands at 124-107 (.537). Three of the four teams in the North have a losing record compared with winning marks for three of the four in the South.
SWING & A...WAIT A MINUTE: One night after Blue Rocks batters did not whiff once, they did so eight times on Wednesday. Five of them were recorded by starter Will Roberts. The former University of Virginia Cavalier only recorded 13 strikeouts at Low-A Lake County in 31 innings before being brought up to Carolina in early May.
THREE - THE MAGIC NUMBER: Wilmington has been held to three runs or less in 12 of its last 14 games and in 34 of its 58 on the year. Over the greater span, the team is 10-24 when held to three or less and 18-6 when plating four plus.
TRINITY REDUX: Wolters' success last night had a theme revolving around the number three. His third three-hit game of the year included his third triple of the season and his third performance of three RBIs in a contest. The big night helped snap a 3-for-24 slump and it came three days before his birthday, which is two multiples of three itself - June 9. Wolters was a third-round pick by the Indians in 2010 after hitting three triples his senior year at Rancho Buena Vista H.S. Just for the heck of it - three.
