Blue Rocks Defeat Mudcats for First 2016 Victory

WILMINGTON, DE - Dansby Swanson was 2-for-4 with two doubles and Jordan Edgerton had a RBI triple, but the Blue Rocks scored a season high six runs and 12 hits while earning their first win of the season 6-4 against the Mudcats on Monday night at Frawley Stadium

The Mudcats (2-3) gave starter Zach Quintana a run to work with in the first, but the Blue Rocks (1-3) answered back with two runs off Quintana to take the early 2-1 lead. Carolina went on to tie it at 2-2 in the fifth, but once again Wilmington immediately answered back.

The Blue Rocks scored three times in the fifth and added one more in the sixth. They also held off a late two-run rally in the eighth to clinch the 6-4 win.

Quintana (L, 0-1) allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits over four and 1/3 innings and took the loss. He finished his first start of the season with a strikeout and 60 pitches thrown (42 strikes).

Wilmington starter Ashton Goudeau earned the win after allowing two runs and four hits over five innings pitched. Goudeau (W, 1-0) struck out seven and did not walk a batter while earing his first win of the year.

Omar Obregon got the Mudcats started with a triple in the first and scored moments later on a RBI double off the wall in right-center by Swanson. Swanson had another double in the eighth and scored in the next at-bat when Edgerton ripped his triple to left-center.

Swanson was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a RBI in the loss. He has four doubles this season and is batting .333 in four games. Edgerton's triple was his first of the year and his drove in his first run of the season. He was 1-for-4 in the game for Carolina.

Edgerton's triple was Carolina's second of the game and the team's fifth of the season. The Mudcats have had at least one triple in all but one game this season.

Relievers Wes Parsons and Carlos Salazar pitched the remainder of the game after Quintana departed in the fifth. Parsons worked the fifth, sixth and seventh. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits in two and 2/3 innings and struck out one. Salazar pitched a scoreless eighth and struck out two.

Joey Meneses was 2-for-4 and Keith Curcio was 1-for-4 with a RBI in the loss for Carolina. Curcio is batting .450 through five games this season. Meneses is hitting .333.

Derek Gordon earned his first hold of the year for Wilmington with two scoreless innings pitched behind Goudeau. Brennan Henry finished the game for Wilmington and allowed two runs and two hits in his appearance.

The series continues on Tuesday night with the first pitched scheduled for 6:35 p.m. in Wilmington. Enderson Franco (0-1, 40.50) will get the start for Carolina in game two against Wilmington's Colin Rogers (-, -.--).

The Mudcats will open their home schedule on Thursday night against the Myrtle Pelicans. Opening night will feature a magnet schedule giveaway and discounted beverages for Thirsty Thursday. Opening Night 2016 will not feature postgame fireworks as previously depicted on the team's pocket schedule.
