Happ Delivers Walk-Off Double to Cap Pelicans' Ninth Inning Comeback

The Pelicans (3-2) took advantage of 11 walks from Dash (1-4) pitching to come back from a three run deficit. The 11 free passes are the most allowed in a game by Winston-Salem since May 26, 2011, when they walked 12.

Winston-Salem reliever Danny Dopico (0-1) walked four of the five batters he faced in the ninth inning, allowing Myrtle Beach to pull to within 4-3. Dopico was replaced by Euclides Leyer, who got two strikes on Happ before the former Cincinnati Bearcat launched the game-winner.

The scoring began in the top of the fourth when Gerson Montilla came up with a one-out single. Nick Basto followed and connected on a two-run home run to left-center to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth, Michael Danner led off with a walk before the Myrtle Beach defense ran into trouble. Consecutive errors by the Pelicans defense then allowed Danner to score to make it 3-0 Dash.

In the bottom of the fifth, The Pelicans got three straight singles from David Bote, Gioskar Amaya and Charcer Burks to plate a run for Myrtle Beach, making the score 3-1. They added on another two batters later when Gleyber Torres grounded out to shortstop.

But the score didn't remain 3-2 for long. With two outs and nobody on in the sixth, Marcus Davis smoked a double into the corner before Brett Austin drove him in with a single. That came off Pelicans reliever Ryan McNeil, who put up zeroes in the seventh and eighth.

Winston-Salem reliever Connor Walsh turned in two hitless innings before turning it over to Dopico with a 4-2 lead in the ninth. David Berg (1-0) earned the win for the Pelicans after working a perfect top of the ninth.

Monday's walk-off is the first for Myrtle Beach since the Mills Cup Championship-clinching win against Wilmington in 2015. It's also the first time the Pelicans have drawn 11 walks since September 2 of 2015, when they picked up 16 free passes.

The Pelicans and Dash will meet again at 7:05pm Tuesday night. Tommy Thorpe (0-0, 0.00) gets the start for Myrtle Beach, to be opposed by Spencer Adams (0-0, 4.50) of Winston-Salem.
