Potomac Nationals News Release
Lynchburg, VA - After a smooth and seamless easy sweep of the Blue Rocks in Wilmington, the Potomac Nationals (4-0 Overall, 4-0 Road) continued their winning ways in a 10-1 victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats (3-2 Overall, 3-2 Home) Monday night. Potomac scored in each of the first four innings and led 8-1 after the top of the third, as the Nationals cruised to their fourth straight victory. RHP Boone Whiting (1-0) allowed a first inning home run to SS Yu-Cheng Chang, but did not give up a hit after that through his five innings. 2B Bryan Mejia led off the game with a double and scored on a single by 1B Jose Marmolejos, the first of two RBI-hits for the first basemen.
Tied 1-1 after an inning, Potomac put the first of three straight crooked numbers on the board. LHP Sean Brady (0-1) struggled mightily to get through four full innings. He gave up a leadoff double in each of the first three innings, all three scored. C Matt Reistetter began the second with a double and went to third base on a single by SS Osvaldo Abreu. After Marmolejos drew a walk which loaded the bases, RF Dale Carey recorded his second hit in as many innings, a two-run single that made it 3-1, the eventual game winning hit.
DH Drew Ward began the third frame with a double and later scored on a wild pitch. After Reistetter reach on an error by Lynchburg 3B Yu-Cheng Chang, RF Narciso Mesa made it 5-1 with his first hit of the season, an RBI single. The P-Nats added three more runs in the fourth inning. Abreu reached on the second of four errors on the night by the Hillcats and scored on a single by Marmolejos. Carey proceeded with his third hit of the game, a two-run blast off of the scoreboard in left field. Carey's first home run of the season made it 8-1 Potomac in the third.
Whiting was sensational in his Nationals debut. After the solo home run by Chang two batters into the game, he faced the minimum the rest of the way. Whiting had three strikeouts, one walk, and induced a double play that ended the fifth frame and his night, as RHP Andrew Robinson followed with nearly perfect stuff. The righty allowed just two hits and struck out three over three-shutout innings, while RHP Koda Glover set down the side in order in the ninth.
Brady gave up 11 hits, eight runs, and five earned runs over just four innings in his 2016 debut. Out of the bullpen for the Hillcats, RHP Jordan Milbrath fared better with three scoreless innings as struck out a pair. RHP Cole Sulser on the other hand did not fare as well in his second appearance of the season, as he gave up a pair of runs. LF Alec Keller plated Ward and 3B Khayyan Norfork with a single in the eighth inning that capped off the scoring.
All nine Potomac starters and pinch-hitter 1B David Masters had at least one hit, five players had at least two hits, and Carey led the way with three. Carey also set a new season high with four RBIs while the Nationals' bullpen lowered its ERA on the year to 0.47 over 19 innings. Potomac is the lone undefeated team in the Carolina League and leads the league in runs scored and runs allowed.
It's a Tuesday matinee for game two of the set between the Nationals and the Hillcats, as RHP Luis Reyes (0-0, 0.00) is set for his first start of 2016 for the P-Nats, while 2014 1st round pick (31st overall) Justus Sheffield (0-0, 6.00) will make his second start of the season for Lynchburg. The P-Nats broadcast will begin with the "P-Nats Lead-Off Show" at 10:45am, with first pitch scheduled for 11:00am in Lynchburg.
