May 14, 2023 - South Atlantic League (SAL)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
The Rocks started off hot in the first inning. Starting pitcher Andrew Alvarez retired the Cyclones in order in only eight pitches, giving the offense a chance to capitalize quickly.
In the bottom half of the first, Viandel Pena started things off with a leadoff single. One batter later, Jacob Young hit a double scoring Pena from first to give the Rocks a 1-0 advantage.
They would not stop there though, as James Wood would follow that up with an RBI double of his own to make it 2-0 Rocks and two batters later, Wood would score on an RBI single by Will Frizzell.
Alvarez started the second inning off with a strikeout but found himself in trouble as Stanley Consuegra would reach first on the strikeout thanks to a wild pitch. One batter later, Consuegra would score on an RBI double off the bat of William Lugo. A ground out by Omar De Los Santos would move Lugo over to third and he would score on an RBI groundout by Chase Estep to make it 3-2.
In the top of the third, the Cyclones would continue their comeback. A leadoff walk for Joe Suozzi was followed by a single for Kevin Kendall. Suozzi would then steal third and score on a throwing error to tie the game. In the fourth, the Cyclones would take the lead thanks to an RBI triple by Mateo Gil to make it 4-3. They would add some insurance also with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Suozzi to make it 5-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Rocks would start their own comeback. A leadoff double for Wood, his second of the game, started the inning. Wood would then advance to third on a wild pitch and score on a Caleb Farmer single to make it a 5-4 game.
In the bottom of the seventh, it was Wood again. This time leading off with a game-tying solo home run. His home run was followed by a Trey Lipscomb double but Lipscomb would not score.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Rocks would complete their comeback. A one out walk by Jordy Barley started the rally. After Barley stole second for his ninth stolen base of the season, he would advance to third on a Young fly out to right. The Cyclones would avoid pitching to Wood, choosing to intentionally walk him which brought up Lipscomb with a chance to give his team the lead. After falling into an 0-2 count, Lipscomb ripped a single up the middle to score Barley and give the Rocks the lead for good.
The Cyclones would go down in order in the ninth to give the Rocks their third straight win. The Rocks will now travel to Lakewood, New Jersey as they start a six game series with the Jersey Shore Blue Claws on Tuesday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:05.
