Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
The Blue Crabs battled back from a five run deficit, but in the end lost to the Bridgeport Bluefish 7-6 in 10 innings Monday night at Regency Furniture Stadium.
Bridgeport had a 5-0 lead by the third before Southern Maryland responded in the bottom of the inning. Catcher Christian Lopez hit a one out double, and scored on third baseman Patrick Osborn's RBI single. RHP Matt Pike held the Crabs scoreless through the fourth and fifth, but was roughed up in his final two innings. Leftfielder Greg Porter led off the sixth with a home run into left-centerfield, making it 5-2 Bluefish. It was Porter's first homer as a Blue Crab.
The Crabs then rallied with two outs in the seventh to tie the game. Second baseman Casey Benjamin doubled and came home on another RBI single by Osborn. Designated hitter Matt Craig followed with a two run homer into leftfield, his 15th of the season.
Meanwhile, the Blue Crabs bullpen kept the Bluefish scoreless through the next five innings. LHP Craig Anderson started, tossing three innings for a no decision. Shortstop
Travis Garcia gave his team a 6-5 edge in the eighth with an RBI single into shallow rightfield. The hit drove in first baseman Eric Crozier who tripled to lead off the inning.
The lead didn't last long though, as Bridgeport tied the game in the ninth on an RBI single by designated hitter Joe Jiannetti. Centerfielder Adam Greenberg then scored the winning run in extras on a wild pitch after drawing a walk and reaching third on an error.
RHP Bartolome Fortunato improved to 3-1, while righthander Jim Ed Warden (5-4) suffered the loss.
The Blue Crabs return to action Tuesday night for game two of this three game series against the Bridgeport Bluefish at Regency Furniture Stadium. RHP Denny Stark (8-4, 4.51) will start for Bridgeport opposite fellow righty Joe Newby for Southern Maryland (6-5, 2.43). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
