Newark Bears News Release

(Lancaster, P.A., Sept. 14, 2010) - The Lancaster Barnstormers used a 15-hit effort en route to a 9-1 win over the Newark Bears on Tuesday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

After two scoreless frames started the game, Lancaster jumped all over the Bears and starter Kelvin Villa with an 11 batter third inning. Aaron Herr blasted a two-run home run just over the wall in right field to make it 2-0 and start a string of eight-straight Barnstormers reaching base successfully. Octavio Martinez, L.J. Biernbaum, and Vic Gutierrez, who started the frame with a strikeout, added RBI singles to push the lead to five runs and drove Villa from the game.

With Drew Coffey on the hill, Bryant Nelson helped pad the 'Stormers' advantage with a solo home run out to right in the fourth after a dropped foul ball by catcher Manny Mejia. Two more errors led to two more unearned runs crossing the plate to push it to 8-0 Lancaster.

Jose Sanchez frustrated the Bears all night, scattering just three hits over his first four frames and stranding five base runners. Newark finally broke through in the fifth inning as Brian Barton ripped his fourth triple of the season to score Kennard Jones and it was 8-1 Lancaster. Newark collected just one more hit and three base runners against relievers Tim McNab and Sean Thompson. Martinez plated a late run for Lancaster with a sacrifice fly in the eighth to complete the scoring.

Sanchez (7-11) earned the win, firing six innings, with four walks and four strikeouts. Villa (3-10) shouldered the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits, while striking out four. Nick Renault tossed four innings in relief of Coffey with four hits, two walk and two strikeouts.
