Lancaster Stormers News Release

After giving up a dozen or more runs in three of the previous five games, Lancaster received a stellar pitching effort from Jose Sanchez on Tuesday evening, taking a 9-1 decision from the Newark Bears in front of 4,039 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

The right-hander from Maracaibo, Venezuela allowed six hits and the one run while walking four and striking out four over a six-inning stretch. It was the third straight winning decision for Sanchez (7-11).

Lancaster put nothing together against Newark starter Kelvin Villa (3-10) until a two-out explosion in the third. Villa had fanned the first two batters of the inning, but Bryant Nelson was able to beat out an infield single, a ball that was flagged by second baseman Tim Raines, Jr. after an unnaturally high bounce toward the middle. Aaron Herr cracked his 23rd homer of the season onto the corner of the picnic deck in right center field. Reggie Taylor followed with a double into the right field corner. Ryan Mulhern picked up a walk to fill in first. Octavio Martinez rolled a grounder into left to score Taylor, and Mulhern strode across as L.J. Biernbaum stroked a single just past the diving Raines. Villa drilled Brett Flowers with a pitch to load the sacks. Vic Gutierrez beat out an infield single up the middle to produce run number five.

Nelson was handed a second life leading off the fourth as his foul pop up was dropped. He responded by yanking the next pitch onto the deck for a 6-0 lead. The Barnstormers refilled the bases on an error, a single and a walk. Biernbaum was unable to cash in on the chance, lofting a fly ball to left. Kennard Jones handled it and fired home as the runners held. However, catcher Manny Mejia tried for a play on Martinez at first and skipped a throw down the right field line as two more runs scored.

Newark's only run crossed the plate in the fifth. Sanchez walked Jones with two outs. Brian Barton lifted a fly ball toward the right field corner which got jarred loose from Taylor's glove on a diving try in the corner. Jones scored as Barton raced to third with a triple.

Former Barnstormer Nick Renault pitched the final four innings for Newark and yielded only one run on a sacrifice fly by Martinez.

The rubber game of the series will take place at 6:30 on Wednesday as Wayne Franklin (2-4) will square off against Shane Youman (3-1, 5-5).
