
Blue Crabs and Skeeters Split the Doubleheader

(Sugar Land TX., June 1st, 2015)---Blue Crabs manager Stan Cliburn came into the doubleheader tonight two wins away from 1,500 for his career. Southern Maryland took game one by the final of 5-1, and fell to Sugar Land in game two 13-5.
In game one, Southern Maryland struck first scoring a run in the top of the third. Jamar Walton hit a solo homerun, his first of the year to give the Blue Crabs the lead. With two outs in the top of the fourth, Cyle Hankerd hit a solo homer of the wall to make it 2-0. Hankerd would homer again to lead off a three run top of the seventh inning. Following the homerun, Gustavo Molina singled, followed by a Daryle Ward double to put runners at second and third. After starter Sean Gallagher was pulled for Cory VanAllen, Casey Stevenson singled to score Molina. The next hitter Jamar Walton hit a sacrifice fly to score Ward to make it 5-0.
Sugar Land added a run in the bottom of the seventh, but RHP Shaun Garceau pitched a complete game, seven innings, allowing a run, on three hits, and striking out five. The Blue Crabs also banged out seven hits, led by Cyle Hankerd and Casey Stevenson who each had two hits apiece.
In game two Sugar Land came out swinging, scoring 13 runs on 12 hits. Each team scored a run in the first inning. In the top of the second, Southern Maryland scored four runs. Jamar Walton led off with a single. The next hitter Craig Maddox doubled to score Walton from first. Antone DeJesus then singled to put runners at first and third. Fred Lewis drew an eight pitch walk, and with runners at every base, Renny Osuna singled to score Maddox, and DeJesus. Two batters later with runners at first and third, Daryle Ward singled to score Fred Lewis bring the score to 5-1.
Sugar Land's offense took over scoring 12 runs over the next four innings. After scoring a run in the bottom of the third, Chris Wallace singled to start the bottom of the fourth. Patrick Palmeiro followed with a single, and a Denny Almonte walk to load the bases. Amadeo Zazueta hit a bases clearing double, scoring Wallace, Palmeiro, and Almonte. Sean Keeler came out of the bullpen in relief for starter Brian Burres, and the next hitter Willy Taveras dropped down a sacrifice bunt, and reached third on a throwing error by Keeler allowing Zazueta to score, and putting Taveras at third. Dustin Martin drove in Taveras with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-5.
In the bottom of the fifth, with Chris Wallace at third, Denny Almonte drove in Wallace with a sacrifice fly. After a Zazueta single, and stolen base, Willy Taveras single to score Zazueta to make it 9-5.
The Skeeters capped off their scoring with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Delwyn Young led off with a double, followed by an error by the right fielder Fred Lewis to allow Barfield to reach base to put runners at first and third. Beamer Weems hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Young. Two batter later, with runners at first and second, Palmeiro doubled to score both Barfield, and Wallace. A couple of batters later, Zazueta singled in Palmeiro to bring the score to 13-5.
Blue Crabs starter Brian Burres made hit return to the rotation, throwing just three innings, allowing six runs, on six hits, and walking four. In game two Delwyn Young went 3-3 with two RBIs out of the number three spot in the order, while Amadeo Zazueta went 3-3 with four RBIs in game two out of the ninth place spot in the order.
The Blue Crabs and the Skeeters conclude their seven game set tomorrow evening in Sugar Land Texas. RHP Jon Leicester (1-0, 0.90 ERA) will throw for Southern Maryland, while RHP Roy Merritt (1-0, 0.00) will toss for Sugar Land. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
