Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn. - June 2, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (16-21) were defeated by the Liberty Division leading Somerset Patriots (26-11) 3-1 in the opener of two seven inning games scheduled at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday. Game number two was postponed due to rain and will be made up at a later date to be announced. Somerset defeated the 'Fish for the third time in as many games, completing a sweep of the rain shortened series. Bridgeport suffered their seventh consecutive defeat, while being limited to just three hits overall.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Reinaldo Lopez (0-1) suffered the loss in his first appearance in a Bluefish uniform, tossing six innings, giving up three runs (two earned runs), on eight hits, walking three (one intentional walk), and striking out six. Somerset Starting Pitcher Randy Boone (1-1) was victorious, pitching a complete game, going seven innings, allowing one run and three hits, striking out four and not walking a batter. Boone retired the last 13 batters he faced en route to the win.
The 'Fish took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning off Boone. Jake Luce picked up his first hit as a member of the 'Fish with a leadoff triple, and would come in to score the game's first run on an RBI groundout by Sean Burroughs. Somerset would take the lead in the top half of the third inning off Lopez, scoring two runs in the frame. Nate Spears led off with a single, and then stole second base. With two outs, Aharon Eggleston hit a dribbler down the third base line for an infield single. Sean Burroughs tried to catch Spears sleeping off the third base bag as he advanced from second, but threw the ball away for an error, and Spears scored the tying run. Scott Cousins would give the Patriots the lead with an RBI single off Lopez, scoring Eggleston, and in the blink of an eye Somerset had the lead 2-1 and never looked back. Scot Kelly's RBI single in the top of the sixth inning off Lopez gave Somerset a bit of breathing room, but it was more than enough for Boone who went the distance for the Patriots. Luce led the way for Bridgeport with two hits on the day.
The Bluefish embark on an eight game road trip to Southern Maryland and Sugar Land beginning tomorrow night before returning home to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday, June 11th, when they welcome in the Long Island Ducks as the 2015 Ferry Cup Series continues. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
