Lexington County Blowfish News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C.- The Columbia Blowfish topped the Gastonia Grizzlies 2-1 Saturday night in front of 5,138 fans as the Blowfish held their annual Fort Jackson/US Army Birthday Celebration night. More than 3,000 troops and veterans were in attendance.
The Blowfish got a dominant pitching performance from starter Derek Beasley. Beasley went eight innings giving up one run on seven hits while striking out ten. "Beasley did a great job of filling the zone and getting hitters out. I could be more proud of him," said pitching coach Jon Coutlangus.
Out of the seven hits given up by Beasley six were singles and only one was for extra bases. Connor Sullivan came on in relief and got the save for the Blowfish. Sullivan had one strike out in his inning of work.
The Blowfish got to work offensively in the second inning after Josh Miller drew a two-out walk and advanced to third after the throw down to second as Miller attempted to steal made its way into centerfield. Miller then scored the first run of the game on a Tre-Von Johnson single. The Grizzlies answered in the fourth after Tyler White doubled to lead off the inning and after being sacrificed to third scored on a Jordan Hunt RBI single.
The Blowfish took the lead for good in the seventh after Miller walked and advanced to third after stealing second and the ball getting away from the second baseman and shortstop. Miller scored the go-ahead run on a Jarrod Reed sacrifice fly to right field.
Jason Martyn started on the mound for the Grizzlies pitching seven innings giving up two runs of which one was earned on two hits and he struck out five. Dale Innes relieved Martyn in the eighth; in his one inning of work he gave up one hit and struck out one.
The Blowfish will be back in action on Monday June 11 as they host the Fayetville SwampDogs; first pitch is set for 7:05 at Historic Capital City Stadium. Tickets are available at www.blowfishbaseball.com.
