Lomascolo Dazzles in 2012 Debut

June 9, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Forest City Owls News Release

Martinsville, VA- Nick Lomascolo displayed the same poise and control that's made him one of the best Owls pitchers in recent years. The lefty shut down the Martinsville Mustangs, allowing just two runs on four hits and three walks over eight innings in a 7-2 Forest City win. Lomascolo tossed 101 pitches and at one point retired nine in a row.

Nate Chong led the offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with three runs driven in and helped to produce a fourth. The centerfielder drove in the opening run in the first inning, scoring Gunnar Heidt who led off the game with a double and stole third base. Then in the 7th inning, Chong took advantage of a rundown between first and second base, by scoring the go-ahead run from third.

In the 8th inning, Chong helped extend the lead by lining a bases loaded single to right field, scoring two runs. Will Chandler followed that up with an RBI single as well to give Lomascolo a three-run edge going into the bottom of the inning. The Mustangs would load the bases in the 8th against him, but scored just one run on a wild pitch, as he struck out Derrick Hopkins looking to end the frame.

The Owls spaced things out again in the top of the 9th inning, adding two more runs. Byran Aanderud drove in one with a sacrifice fly. Then, an error by Nick Ferdinand allowed a second run to come in, giving Forest City the 7-2 lead. Craig Shirley pitched the ninth to finish the game for the Owls. Martinsville starter Brandon Hinkle was nearly every bit Lomascolo's equal, allowing five hits and five earned runs with eight strikeouts in eight innings. Hinkle retired 12 straight batters at one point during his outing.

Forest City has an off day tomorrow. The Owls start next week with three straight games against the Gastonia Grizzlies, with home games on Monday and Wednesday. Monday's game will be another Mighty Dollar Monday, with select concessions items just a dollar each. Call 828-245-0000 to order tickets or stop by the ticket booth at McNair Field.
