Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - Justin D'Amato pitched six shutout innings with eight strikeouts to earn his second win of the season and the Steamers (9-0) offense squeaked one run out to keep Edenton perfect in 2012 with a 1-0 defeat of the Morehead City Marlins (3-9) at Historic Hicks Field on Saturday.
Making his first start for Morehead City was left-handed pitcher Matt Wainman against Justin D'Amato (St. John Fisher), who was making his second start of the season for Edenton.
The game was scoreless through the first two innings, with each team picking up one base runner, Morehead City by way of a walk in the second and the Steamers by way of a single in the second.
D'Amato retired the Marlins in order in the first, third and fourth innings while the Steamers picked up their only run of the game in the bottom of the third against Wainman.
With one out D.J Johnson (Mercer University) laced a double off the wall in left-center field and a Jason Kanzler (University of Buffalo) infield single moved Johnson to third. With Nathan Burns (Florida International University) batting, Wainman picked off Kanzler. The first baseman Sal Annunziata got Kanzler in a run down and threw to the shortstop Geoff Degroot, who tagged Kanzler in the back. While the rundown was occurring Johnson broke from third for the plate. After Degroot had tagged Kanzler he threw off balance to the plate. The throw sailed up the first base line and hit the catcher's mask, which had been thrown there to get it out of the way. The ball ricocheted to the back stop and Johnson slid in safely to give Edenton a 1-0 lead.
A leadoff single in the top of the fifth for the Marlins was neutralized by catcher Wes Meadows (Otterbein University), when he gunned down Ryan Cranmer trying to steal second. A groundout and fly out followed to end the inning.
The Steamers got a two out triple from Burns but stranded him there to keep the score 1-0 Steamers going to the top of the sixth. The Marlins got back-to-back one out singles but D'Amato induced a fly out followed by a strikeout to end the threat and his night
D'Amato pitched six innings allowing no runs on three hits; he walked one and struck out eight for his second win of the season.
Wainman retired the Steamers in order in the bottom of the sixth to end his night. He pitched six complete innings, allowing one run on six hits, no walks and he struck out five for his first loss of the season.
Matt Duncan (Morehead St. University), Travis Huber (University of Nebraska) and Jordan Egan combined for three shutout innings to complete the win for Edenton.
In the ninth Egan came on for his fifth save of the season in as many chances. Annunziata began the inning with a single. With a 2-0 count to Matt Anderson, Egan spun around and threw wide of first base. The ball trickled down the right field line. Annunziata broke immediately for second base. He rounded second and headed for third as first baseman Spencer Branigan retrieved the ball and fired a laser to Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) at third base. The ball landed in Kraemer's glove about an inch off the ground and Annunziata slid right into the tag for the first out of the inning. A walk ensued to Anderson. Ryan Cranmer struck out looking as Anderson stole second base. Dalton Knight hit a high chopper over Egan on the mound. The ball was fielded behind the bag by Alex Alfonso (Florida Tech University) who, seeing that he had no play at first looked to third. Anderson rounded the bag and headed home as Alfonso fired to Meadows at the plate. The ball beat Anderson by about eight feet and Meadows applied the tag to Anderson ending the game and giving D'Amato his second win, Egan his fifth save and Wainman his first loss.
