Morehead City Marlins News Release
EDENTON, N.C. - The Edenton Steamers (9-0) and Morehead City Marlins (3-9) combined for just one run as the Steamers stayed perfect, downing the Marlins 1-0 Saturday evening in Edenton.
The Steamers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when D.J. Johnson doubled with one out. He advanced to third on an infield single by Jason Kanzler and Johnson scored when Kanzler got into a run-down between first and second base after getting picked off.
The Marlins threatened in the ninth inning, when Sal Annunziata led off with a single, but was thrown out trying to advance to third after an errant pickoff throw at first base. Then Matt Anderson walked and stole second base, but the Marlins could not drive him in.
Justin D'Amato (2-0) earned the win without allowing a run on three hits in six innings of work. Matt Wainman (0-1) took the loss, allowing just one run on six hits in five innings. Jordan Egan earned his fifth save of the summer
Ryan Cranmer was 2-for-3 with a stolen base while Geoff DeGroot and Damon Hoggard also tacked on singles.
The Marlins have their first off day of the season tomorrow before returning home to take on the Peninsula Pilots Monday night at Big Rock Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with Matt Sutor on the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
Notes: Cranmer had a multi-hit day for the second straight night... The shutout marked the second time the Marlins have failed to score on the season. Drew Woodall caught all eight innings after pitching the 12th inning of Friday night's contest.
