Blowfish Win in Extras, 10-9

FOREST CITY, N.C. - Thursday June 13th, the Columbia Blowfish went up to Forest City and took one right out under the wings of the struggling (2-8) Owls at McNair Field.

The Blowfish started the scoring on the night early in the first inning with two runs. With one out, the shortstop D.C. Arendas (South Carolina) reached base by an error. The four-hole batter, Allen Staton (North Greenville) sent an RBI double to left field, his 10th RBI of the season. Later with two away, catcher, David Houser (Tennessee) singled to center scoring Staton.

The Blowfish would continue putting runs on the board with one in the second, one in the fourth, and one in the fifth. The Owls would answer back evening the game up with five runs in their half of the sixth inning. Again errors would be the gist of the inning for the Blowfish as they committed two. In the seventh the Owls would score three runs from two hits, and two more Blowfish errors.

Heading into the top of the eighth, the Blowfish were trailing 9-5, as that quickly changed. Arendas started out the inning with a base hit to right field, Staton would be walked, and after one wild pitch Arendas would score. With Staton at third Houser would ground out to first scoring Staton.

In the top of the ninth the Blowfish would score two more runs to tie the game at nine. With two away, Eros Modena (Bethune-Cookman) walked, Michael Wilson (Francis Marion) singled to left, both of them would advance 90 feet on a wild pitch. Arendas was again the batter and reached on an infield single, the shortstop for the Owls would throw the ball away allowing both Modena and Wilson to score.

In the top of the eleventh Columbia would gain the lead and held on for the win. Zach Smith (Erskine) reached on an error by the Owls pitcher, Brandon Mitchell would move Smith over to second on a SAC bunt, and Modena would follow with an RBI double down the right field line.

The Starting pitcher for the Blowfish Thursday night was right-hander Josh Knab (South Carolina), throwing four strong giving up no runs off of three hits, one walk and five strike outs. He would be relieved in the fifth by Jared Keels (Winthrop), tossing just an inning and a third, giving up four runs, one earned, off of three hits, three walks, and three strike outs. Hunter Privette would come on in the bottom half of the sixth, throwing five and two thirds innings, giving up four runs, two earned, off of five hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. Privette picked up the win, putting him at (2-0) on the season.

Colton Davis (Western Carolina), for the Owls picked up his first loss of the season making him (1-1).

The Columbia Blowfish are now (8-6) on the season, sitting in third place of the Western division of the Coastal Plain League.

The Columbia Blowfish will be back in action at home Friday evening, June 14th facing the Forest City Owls, with first pitch set for 7:05pm. Gates open at 6pm. It's also Crafty Beer Night! $2 specialty Budweiser Beer from 6-8pm!
