Edenton Steamers News Release
WILSON, N.C - Nick Thompson hit a three-run home run and Adam Bray earned his first win of the season as the Edenton Steamers (10-4) won their sixth straight, defeating the Wilson Tobs (8-5) by a score of 9-4 at Historic Fleming Stadium on Thursday night.
Adam Bray (South Dakota State University), having arrived in Edenton only a few days ago, made his first start for the Steamers this summer. For Wilson, Matt Borens, who was already 1-0 against the Steamers this season, got the nod.
After a 55 minute delayed start due to rain and wind around Historic Fleming Stadium, Dominic Fratantuono (Towson University) and Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado) got the offensive party started with a bang, hitting back-to-back solo home runs to give Bray and the Steamers an early 2-0 lead. For Miller, the long ball was his third of the season and second in as many days and for Fratantuono it was his second home run in three days.
Despite relinquishing three walks and a single through the first two innings, Bray hunkered down each time and did not allow a Tob to cross the plate.
Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University) singled to begin the second for Edenton and he came home on Jacob Reese's (Eastern Illinois University) RBI double to make it 3-0 Edenton.
After a walk to Sam Bumpers (Lamar University), Nick Thompson, who homered yesterday, ripped another one over the left-center field wall for a three-run home run and a 6-0 Steamer advantage.
Bray kept rolling, retiring the Tobs in order in both the third and fourth innings and his offense continued to reward him. Edenton added a run in the third on a Bumpers RBI single, his first run batted in of the season. They added another run in the seventh on a Trent Miller single, his ninth RBI of the season, and finally a run in the eighth on a Fratantuono RBI single to push the lead to 9-4.
Wilson, in the bottom of the fifth put up three unearned runs against Bray when Sean Godfrey hit a three-run home run with two outs to make the score at the time 7-3 Steamers. That was as close as Wilson ever got in the ballgame.
Wilson scored their fourth and final run in the home half of the seventh against John Williams (George Mason University). Bradley Morton tripled and Ridge Gonsoulin knocked him in with a double. The run snapped a 10 inning scoreless streak Williams was on to start the season.
Bray pitched five solid innings, his only miscue was the pitch to Godfrey that landed over the left-center field wall in the fifth. Otherwise he pitched five innings and allowed three hits on three walks and struck out six for his first win of the season.
Borens only lasted two innings and took his first loss of the season for the six hits and six runs he allowed; he walked one and struck out four.
Williams, for his four innings of one-run ball earned his second save of the season, allowing only two hits and striking out three.
Edenton travels to Peninsula tomorrow night and is now 10-4 and locked in a first place tie with the Fayetteville SwampDogs who were rained out tonight. First pitch from War Memorial Stadium set for 7:05 p.m.
