Edenton Steamers News Release

HAMPTON, V.A - Nick Thompson broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run home run and Jesse Morris pitched six innings of one-run ball as Edenton (11-4) defeated the Peninsula Pilots (5-8) 3-1 for their seventh straight victory at War Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

Jesse Morris (Wofford College) brought his ridiculously low 0.79 ERA into his third start of the season against the Pilots. Brandon Vick made his third start of the season for Peninsula.

Morris allowed a single in each of the first two innings before tightening down and only allowing one hit in the next four innings he logged on the mound.

Bradon Reitano singled to begin the bottom of the fourth and swiped second base, moved to third on a wild pitched and scored on a Taylor Ostrich ground out to give Peninsula a 1-0 lead.

Edenton tied the game in the top of the fifth against Wes McGuire, who relieved Vick the starter, after he pitched four scoreless innings, allowing only three hits.

The first Steamer run came across the plate mainly due to Peninsula miscues. Sam Bumpers (Lamar University) scored on a Laz Villa (Reedley College) fielder's choice after two Pilots errors, a hit batsman and two fielder's choices. The RBI was Villa's ninth of the season and it tied the game at 1-1.

Zane Ridings entered the game for Peninsula in the top of the sixth and with one out Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University) singled. Nick Thompson (East Carolina University), the former Pilot, smashed a drive down the left field line for his fourth home run of the season and his third home run in as many games. The two-run shot gave Edenton a 3-1 lead.

Morris was electric again on the mound, pitching six innings and relinquishing just three hits, one run; he walked one and struck out six, leaving in line for the win.

Rohn Pierce (Canisius College) entered the game and pitched a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit and Andrew Nelson (St. Catharine College) pitched a scoreless eighth inning before giving way to Jake McCoy (College of the Desert), who closed the 3-1 win for Morris and earned his second save of the season.

For McCoy the win was his second of the season, he is now 2-0 in three starts. Edenton improves to 4-1 against the Pilots this summer and has won seven in a row, pulling into sole possession of first place.

The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
