Blowfish Dominate Grizzlies

GASTONIA, N.C.- The Columbia Blowfish dominated the Gastonia Grizzlies 5-1 Thursday night in Coastal Plain League play. The win is the second of the second half of the season for the Blowfish.

The Blowfish got a dominating pitching performance from starter Zack Russell-Myers. Russell-Myers went eight innings giving up just one run on three hits while striking out four. J.D. Osborne pitched the ninth for the Blowfish and was able to escape a first and second with one out jam to preserve the win.

The Blowfish struck first in the third on a Jarrod Reed groundout to second that scored Daniel Torres. The Blowfish struck again in the fourth when Todd Joyner scored on a wild pitch to give the Blowfish a 2-0 lead.

The Grizzlies cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth before the Blowfish extended their lead to 3-1 in the sixth on an Erik Payne RBI single to center to score Joshua Miller. The Blowfish then took the 5-1 lead in the seventh on a Michael Wilson two RBI single to center scoring Reed and Luke Dunlap.

The Blowfish return home on Friday to face the Asheboro Copperheads. First pitch is set for 7:05 and tickets are available at www.blowfishbaseball.com or 254-FISH.

The Columbia Blowfish are in their seventh season at Historic Capital City Stadium and are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 51 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
