
Pilots Score 12 Unanswered, Run Away with a 13-5 Win

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - After falling behind by four runs early, the Peninsula Pilots (4-1 second half, 16-16-1 overall) scored 12 unanswered runs to down the Morehead City Marlins (1-3 second half, 11-20 overall) by a score of 13-5 on a humid Thursday evening at Big Rock Stadium.
The Pilots took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third but the Marlins answered with four of their own in the bottom of the frame. Chad Shannon tripled with one out and then Jarrett Higgins followed with a walk. Sal Annunziata followed up with an RBI-single and then Sam Ott followed with an RBI-single of his own to put the Marlins ahead 2-1. Then Robbie Rea became the third consecutive hitter to single, driving in two runs to propel the Marlins to a 4-1 lead.
The Marlins increased their lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning and on RBI-double from Shannon that scored Corey Bass, marking the last time the home team would score on the evening.
The Pilots began scratching away at the Marlins lead, scoring two in the fifth and two in the sixth to tie the game at five. Then in the top of the seventh, Cameron Gibson laced a two-run single to give the Pilots a lead for good at 7-5.
The wheels fell off for the Marlins in the ninth inning, as the pitching walked three batters and allowed four hits when the Pilots ran away with the game, scoring six to close the scoring at 13-5.
The win went to Joey Andrews (1-0) who allowed just one hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Evan Zerff (0-2) took the loss for Morehead City after surrendering four runs (three earned) in two innings of relief of Marlins starter Ben Fuchs.
The Marlins' 10-hit attack was led by Shannon who was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, a run scored and an RBI while Sam Ott contributed two hits, a run and an RBI in five at-bats.
The Marlins are back home tomorrow evening when they host the Fayetteville SwampDogs in two seven-inning contests as part of a doubleheader. It's Kroakie Giveaway Night presented by Carteret Vision Center and Facebook Friday. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. with game two beginning approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of game one as Matt Sutor has the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
Notes: Marlins catcher Chace Mitchell pitched to two batters in the ninth and struck out both... The Marlins walked 10 on the evening... The Marlins tie their season-low at nine games under .500.
