Steamers Walk Sharks to Loss

WILMINGTON, NC - The Sharks (18-13, 2-2) broke a 2-2 tie with the Steamers (21-10, 3-2) in the bottom of the eighth inning on back-to-back RBI walks and Wilmington defeated the Steamers 4-2 on Thursday night at Buck Hardee Field.

Edenton did take an early 1-0 lead on Jason Kanzler's (University at Buffalo) fielder's choice in the third inning for his 14th RBI of the season.

Wilmington took a 2-1 lead on back-to-back RBI singles by Alex Freedman and Jeff May in the bottom of the third.

Edenton tied the game in the top of the fourth on an Adam Kirsch (Florida International University) fielder's choice that scored Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) to tie the game at 2-2 and set-up the finish. For Kirsch, it was his second RBI of the season.

Matt Duncan, who issued the two RBI walks in the eighth, took the loss. It was his first loss of the season and he is now 4-1. Wes Hatley, for his perfect eighth inning in relief, earned the win, he is now 3-1 on the season and Andrew Brockett earned his sixth save of the season.

Koby Kraemer saw his 12 game hitting streak snapped after his 0-for-four night. Steamer pitching issued eight walks in the loss and the offense only scratched out two hits, an infield single by Michael Massi (Mercer University) and a single by Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) and they were retired in order five times.

The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 52 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
