Blizzard Set For Rematch With La Crosse
April 8, 2010 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Green Bay Blizzard News Release
Green Bay, WI - The Green Bay Blizzard Professional Football Team has risen from a sea of doubts and unknowns, to new heights in the early going of the 2010 Indoor Football season. Initially concerned with things like what league the team would play in moving forward with the af2 going defunct, would the team retain the Blizzard name, the teams new ownership, front office, coaches and players have focused on providing a great entertainment option for the community, winning games and attempting to bring Titletown it's first Indoor Football Championship. "Our goal from day one was to keep this franchise and indoor football in Green Bay," said Blizzard Co-Owner and Team President Jeff Royle. "We've come a long way as a new organization in a very short time and are very proud of what we have accomplished so far."
When Blizzard players and coaches arrived back in Green Bay Easter morning after a 46-45 comeback win in Maryland and a 15 hour bus ride, they liked what they saw, a season full of potential. Not only has the franchise transitioned nicely to the IFL, they have like a real blizzard, stormed their way right to the top of the IFL Central North Division standings.
Off to a 4-1 record, one of the best starts in franchise history, the Blizzard currently enjoys a two game lead in their division. The Blizzard offense is averaging just over 10 more points than the defense is allowing. Rookie Quarterback Jake Phillips leads the league with 17 touchdown passes, while the defense has excelled with Maurice Simpkins who leads the league with 28 solo tackles. In addition, Blizzard Kicker Tino Amancio has cemented himself as one of the IFL's best.
The Blizzard travel west this coming weekend to battle division and in-state rival the La Crosse Spartans. The Spartans led by Packer Hall of Famer Gilbert Brown has struggled early in their first season as a member of the IFL. The Spartans currently sit at the bottom of the Central North Division at 0-4. The team is averaging just over two touchdowns per game while giving up nearly 40 points through 4 games. They have more rushing touchdowns (6) than they have passing touchdowns (3).
The Blizzard defeated the Spartans easily on March 19 by a score of 48-12 in front of 4048 rowdy opening night fans. Green Bay dominated on both sides of the ball but was especially impressive on the defensive side of the ball holding the Spartans offense to no touchdowns, 3 rushing yards and an average of 3 yards per pass completion. A remarkable defensive effort and a franchise record for fewest points allowed in a game.
