Blazers defeat T-Birds

Kamloops, BC, January 28, 2007 - The Kamloops Blazers defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-3 Sunday night at the Interior Savings Centre.

The T-Birds are 22-16-1-11 and in fourth place in the US Division. They are one point behind the Spokane Chiefs for third place.

Kamloops (35-13-1-1) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Matt Kassian at 15:27 of the first period. Brock Nixon had the only assist on the goal. Seattle tied the game 1-1 on a delayed penalty call on Kamloops 35 seconds after the Blazers opened the scoring. Andre Herman brought the puck into the Blazers zone on the right side. At the face-off dot Herman made a backhand pass towards the slot. Radek Meidl was charging towards the net, took Herman's pass and beat Kamloops goalie Dustin Butler low on the stick side for the tying goal. David Richard also had an assist on the goal.

Kamloops outshot Seattle 13-4 in the first period.

The T-Birds worked a 5-on-3 power play to perfection to take a 2-1 lead. Thomas Hickey had the puck at the point. He fed the puck low to Bud Holloway just above the goal line and to the left of the Kamloops goal. Holloway quickly made a cross-crease pass to Brett Robertson at the right post. Robertson slammed the puck past Butler at 11:58 of the second to give the T- Birds the lead.

The T-Birds outshot the Blazers 8-6 in the second period but Kamloops led 19-12 in total shots heading into the second intermission.

The Blazers tied the game 2-2 on a power-play goal by Ray Macias 49 seconds into the third period. C.J. Stretch and Victor Bartley and the assists.

Juuso Puustinen scored a power-play goal at 6:59 of third to give the Blazers a 3-2 lead. Brock Nixon and Keaton Ellerby had the assists.

Macias scored at 14:05 of the third to give the Blazers a 4-2 lead. Puustinen and Reid Jorgensen had the assists.

Robertson cut the lead to one goal when he scored at 18:09 of the third. He blasted a slap shot past Butler from the right circle. Seattle had pulled goalie Jacob DeSerres for the extra attacker. Hickey had the assist on the goal.

Terrance Delaronde scored an empty-net goal at 18:29 of the third to make it a 5-3 Kamloops lead. Brady Mason had the assist on the goal.

DeSerres made 30 saves on 35 shots and his record is now 6-6-0-2.

Butler stopped 19 of 22 shots and his record is 29-8-0- 0.

The T-Birds next game is Wednesday, January 31, against the Prince George Cougars at 7:05 p.m. at KeyArena.
