Blaze to Welcome Stanley Cup to U.S. Cellular Coliseum
February 24, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bloomington Blaze News Release
The most recognized prize in hockey is headed to Bloomington-Normal.
The Bloomington Blaze, presented by Mid-Illini Credit Union, will be giving fans the opportunity to see the National Hockey League's top prize next week when the Stanley Cup visits U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The Stanley Cup will be at the Blaze's next home game on Thursday, March 1, a 7:05 p.m. face-off against the Quad City Mallards. Fans are welcome to take a personal picture with the cup for $5. Gates to U.S. Cellular Coliseum open at 6 p.m.
The Stanley Cup is North America's oldest trophy awarded to professional athletes, first awarded to Canada's championship hockey club in 1893 after the prize was donated by Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley, Lord Stanley of Preston in 1892. The cup became an exclusively professional prize in 1910, and has been awarded to the National Hockey League's championship team since 1926.
Lord Stanley's Cup is the only professional trophy to bear the names of each team member of the championship club. The Cup lives a unique existence all year round, as since 1995, each of the championship team's players and staff enjoy 24 hours with the Cup. The Cup then enjoys status as the most accessible championship trophy, as it tours throughout North America to allow hockey fans to see the sport's most cherished prize up close.
Tickets for Thursday's game featuring the Stanley Cup, and the remaining four home Blaze games, are available by calling 309-434-2980 or stopping by the U.S. Cellular Coliseum box office weekdays between 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. More information on the Blaze can be found at www.bloomingtonblaze.com, Facebook and Twitter (BLMBlaze). The Blaze visit South Texas this weekend, with 7:30 p.m. contests tonight and Saturday at the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and a 4 p.m. Sunday face-off at the Laredo Bucks. All games can be heard on WJBC.com and viewed on CHL-TV, and fans are invited to watch road games at Gill Street Sports Bar and Restaurant, 3002 Gill Street in Bloomington.
