Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, Texas- With the Rio Grande Killer Bees (22-24-7) still fighting for their playoff lives they had to come out strong against the Bloomington Blaze (18-27-6). It took every bit of the three periods but the Bees scrapped out a 6-4 win in Friday night in front of a sold out State Farm Arena.
Dan Gendur netted a hat trick while line mate Aaron Lee had three points in the win.
The Bees came out firing in the first. Brady Leavold opened the scoring when Lee intercepted a puck along the boards and found Leavold crossing the crease and tipped it past Bloomington goaltender Zane Kalemba just 45 seconds into the first period. The Bees quickly struck again when Lee took a pass in the slot and fired a wrister past Kalemba to make the score 2-0.
The Blaze would not go quietly though. With the Bees chasing the puck along the boards Vladimir Nikiforov was left wide open in the high slot and did not waste the opportunity.
Bloomington tied the game at two early in the second period but the Bees would retake the lead when Lee caught a pass behind the defense he streaked in but was brought down hard, sending him flying into the net. On the ensuing penalty shot Lee wasted no time and sniped a shot high glove side passed Kalemba to put the Bees back up.
Bloomington was again quick to answer tying the game up at the end of the second.
Enter Dan Gendur.
With the Bees on the penalty kill midway through the third Gendur intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and split the defense. With no one left to beat but the goaltender he shot it five hole to once again put the Bees in the driver's seat.
After a Chris Chambers goal with 5:58 left in the period it looked as if the Bees would again have to have to settle things in overtime, before Gendur again got one past Kalemba with 1:53 left in the third period.
Gendur would seal his second hat trick of the season with an empty netter to gain two very important points in the standings.
The Blaze return tomorrow night, puck drop is at 7:30 PM.
