Regina Pats News Release
First Period
The Pats got off to a quick start in Saskatoon as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first six minutes. Jack Rodewald opened things up by launching a point shot past Andrey Makarov. Saskatoon product Connor Gay followed up by scoring his first WHL goal on a scrum in front of Makarov to give the Pats a two goal lead. Dyson Stevenson ended Makarov's night as he stole the puck in front and snapped the Pats' third goal by the surprised Blades goaltender. Alex Moodie came into the game in relief of Makarov and came up with some big saves to prevent the Pats from finding the back of the net again in the period. The Blades got one of the goals back as Jessey Astles laid a big hit on Emil Sylvegard freeing the puck for Matej Stransky who moved it ahead to Brendan Walker. Walker finished the play with a nice backhand move to beat Teagan Sacher and the score sat 3-1 for the visitors after twenty minutes. The Blades outshot the Pats 12-10 through the first frame.
Second Period
It was a wild period that got started early when Morgan Klimchuk gave the Pats a 4-1 lead just fifty-seven seconds into the period after a quick drop pass from Chandler Stephenson. With the Blades on the powerplay, Lane Scheidl stole the puck and raced ahead, beating Moodie on the backhand for his second shorthanded goal in as many games. The Blades came right back on the powerplay and got the marker back as Collin Valcourt shoved the puck behind Sacher. A few minutes later, Valcourt would tally again and bring the Blades within two goals at a 5-3 score. It looked like the teams would head to the final period at that count, but the Pats struck for two late. Marc McCoy snapped the puck on a perfect line just under the cross-bar to beat Moodie. Then Scheidl followed it up just seconds later with a wrister through the five-hole of the Blades' netminder to send the Pats to the third period with a 7-3 lead on the scoreboard and a 23-22 lead on the shot clock.
Third Period
The Pats entered the frame with a four goal lead, but would watch it slip away as the Blades scored four times in the final stanza. Josh Nicholls, Shane McColgan, Darren Dietz brought the Blades within one midway through the third period. Just three minutes after the Blades scored their sixth, rookie Matt Revel tied the game on a great backhand play. The Pats stemmed the tied and the game went on to the extra frame.
Both teams had some excellent scoring chances in OT as Alex Moodie was forced to make a couple of great saves in the Blades net. Teagan Sacher came up with the save of the game, making an unreal glove stop on Brenden Walker as he waited out the Pats netmider, but couldn't beat him on the glove side. With time winding down in the extra frame, Walker put the finishing touches on his first star performance when he scorched down the wing then beat Sacher low to give the Blades the 8-7 OT victory .
