Blades Win Goaltenders' Duel At Home

The Saskatoon Blades capped off the season series with the division rival Swift Current Broncos with a 2-1 shootout victory on Wednesday evening at home.

Josh Nicholls (Tsawwassen, BC) scored in regulation time before Jeremy Boyer (Saskatoon, SK) and Marek Viedensky (Handlova, Slovakia) potted shootout markers to claim the victory the Blades, who have now won three straight games.

Swift Current - 2nd - Matt Tassone (Michael Stickland, Travis Bobbee) 18:48 pp After a scoreless first period, Tassone put the Broncos up 1-0 before the middle frame was out on his 12th of the season. The overage forward let go a wrist shot from the right circle that found its way through a screen and past Steven Stanford (Calgary, AB) in the Blades net.

Saskatoon - 1st - Nicholls (Viedensky, Sena Acolatse) 15:21 The Blades evened the score with just under five minutes remaining in regulation on Nicholls' 12th of the year. Acolatse (Edmonton, AB) sent a hard pass from inside his own blue line that was knifed ahead by Viedensky right onto the stick of Nicholls at the far blue line. The sophomore forward moved in on a breakaway and beat goaltender Morgan Clark with a wrist shot blocker side.

Shootout - Saskatoon - Boyer - Goal The 19-year-old Boyer carried the puck on his forehand, made a hard deke getting Clark to move his left, and put it high over the right shoulder of the goaltender. - Swift Current - Cody Eakin - Save Stanford stopped Eakin after the Broncos leading scorer tried a forehand-to-backhand move but lost control, putting it into the left pad of the Blades goaltender. - Saskatoon - Viedensky -Goal The Blades went up by two in the shootout after Viedensky moved across the crease, deking Clark left-to-right and putting a shot just under the crossbar glove side. - Swift Current - Justin Dowling - Save Dowling was unsuccessful in his attempt to keep the Broncos alive after trying to beat Stanford five-hole and getting denied.

Stanford turned aside 22 of 23 shots during the game for the Blades before stopping both shootout attempts. Clark stopped 32 of 33 shots in the Broncos net and was 0 for 2 in the shootout.

Final score Saskatoon Blades 2, Swift Current Broncos 1 (SO).

With the win, the Blades go to 37-12-3-3 for 80 points and jump back into a first place tie with the Brandon Wheat Kings atop both the East Division and Eastern Conference with three games in hand. The Broncos fall to 28-26-0-4 for 60 points on the season and move into a tie for eighth in the Eastern Conference with the Moose Jaw Warriors as a result of the single point.

The Blades now head off on a three-game road trip through the Central Division this weekend. On Friday, the Blades are in Medicine Hat to take on the Tigers. Saturday sees the Blades battle the Lethbridge Hurricanes. And finally, on Sunday, the Bridge City Bunch travels to Cranbrook to face the Kootenay Ice.
