ESTERO, FL - In their 900th franchise game, the Florida Everblades (21-18-2) saw their offensive struggles continues as the Greenville Road Warriors (24-10-2) battled from behind to snap their three-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory on Thursday night at the BI-LO Center.
In a battle between two teams tying to snap out of funks, the Everblades got off to a good start tallying the first goal early in the first period to grab the 1-0 lead. Ross Carlson tallied the Everblades' league-leading ninth short-handed goal of the season at 3:41.
The play developed with a nice play defensively by David Fischer who kicked the puck ahead to Carlson in the neutral zone where he started in on a 2-on-1 rush with Francis Lemieux. From the right circle Carlson's attempted pass to Lemieux ricocheted off the defender and past Road Warriors goaltender Nic Riopel for his fourth goal of the season.
Greenville answered back with a controversial goal at 14:01 on a play that saw Road Warriors defenseman TJ Reynolds throw a shot on net from the bottom of the right circle that was stopped by Everblades net-minder Jaroslav Janus. The rebound however popped up in the air and appeared to be swatted into the net by Chris McKelvie with his glove. The goal was allowed to stand and evened the score at one.
The Road Warriors then collected the lead with a power play goal at 15:08 of the frame. After a shot from the left circle by Mark Voakes was stopped by Janus, the rebound kicked into the right circle where Blake Parlett fired a quick shot into the upper left corner of the net.
Neither team got on the scoreboard in the second period although both clubs had close chances late in the frame, but both time saw the puck ring off the goal post. In the end, Greenville out-shot the Everblades 13-7 in the middle frame and maintained their 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
The Road Warriors eventually added some insurance to their lead late in the third period on Brandon Wong's ninth goal of the season and his fifth against the Everblades at 13:39 off an assist from Voakes. Greenville added the final touches at 16:55 when Shane Harper's shot from the top of the right circle squeezed past Janus and into the net to give the Road Warriors a 4-1 lead.
With the win Greenville improved to 7-3-0 vs. Florida this season.
In goal Janus suffered the loss, falling to 8-10-0 after allowing the four goals on 34 shots while Riopel improved to 7-3-1 overall and 4-0-1 against the Everblades after stopping 26 of 27 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades closed out the game 0-of-6 while Greenville closed out the night 1-of-9.
