Aces Point Streak Snaps in 3-2 Loss in Ontario

January 13, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

The Alaska Aces 11-game point streak was snapped on Wednesday night with a 3-2 regulation loss visiting the Ontario Reign. The Aces suffered their first regulation defeat since December 8th, and fell to 21-10-2 on the year. The Aces will continue their five-game trip on Friday in Bakersfield. Fans can visit the Aces at their Facebook page for more information, or call the Aces at 907.258.ACES.

The Reign scored on their first shot of them game when C.J. Stretch tallied from the outside of the left circle 1:56 into the game to make it 1-0 Ontario. That score stood until midway through the second period when Scott Howes scored from the slot at 13:24 to even the game. The goal extended Howes' point streak to a season-high, seven games.

With the game tied 1-1 entering the third, the Aces opened the period with a flurry. Brian Swanson scored 62 seconds into the period to give Alaska their first lead of the game. The Aces hit a post 20 seconds later, nearly extending the lead. But it stayed 2-1, and the game turned at 3:33 when newly-acquired Reign defenseman Jason Fredericks dumped the puck in from center ice, and it bounced awkwardly off a partition and into the empty net as netminder Adam Courchaine went behind the net to stop the dump in. The goal tied the score at 2-2, and erased the Aces lead for the rest of the night. A couple minutes later at 5:46, Dusty Collins scored on a shorthanded slap shot from the left point for the eventual game-winning goal. The Aces had chances down the stretch, but could not find the equalizer and suffered their first regulation loss in over a month.

Adam Courchaine (5-3-1) made 26 saves on 29 shot for the win. Beau Erickson (1-5) earned the win, making 34 saves on 36 shots. The Aces power play went 0-4, while the Reign went 0-4. The Aces outshot the Reign 36-29 in the game.

The Aces continue their five-game road trip on Friday with a trip to face the Bakersfield Condors. The game can be heard back in Anchorage on NewsTalk 750AM KFQD, beginning at 5:45pm AKST. The Aces will then continue their busy week when they visit Las Vegas on Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday, completing a stretch of five games in seven nights. The Aces will return home to host the Victoria Salmon Kings on Friday and Saturday, January 21st and 22nd.
