Saskatoon Blades News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Saskatoon Blades were good, but not good enough, to produce an upset victory against the top ranked team in the Western Hockey League on Friday night. An admirable effort in Edmonton came up short for the visiting Toon Town Troops as the Oil Kings scored the final two goals of the game to win 4-3.

The Oil Kings, ranked 2nd in the Canadian Hockey League currently and on top of the WHL's overall league standings, had all the answers for the Blades who went toe-to-toe with the home side until the final breath.

After falling behind two-zip in the 1st period, Saskatoon played a perfect road period in the 2nd with consecutive goals coming from their top defensive pairing: veterans Nolan Kneen & Scott Walford. From a Chase Wouters' face-off win, Kneen drove down the right wing to a tight angle with the net and fired home truly over the shoulder of Edmonton's netminder. Less than five minutes later and Walford found the back of the net blasting home a one timer set up by Kneen & Tristen Robins on the power play.

Eric Florchuk made it three in a row for the Blades, putting his club up by one with a fantastic individual effort short-handed. After clearing the puck from the zone, Florchuk followed up by harassing Edmonton's point-men into a turnover at the neutral zone before speeding away on a breakaway. He finished by netting his 6th goal of the season through the five-hole.

However, back-to-back goals by the Oil Kings saw the home side skate off 4-3 victors against the Blades.

For his goal and assist, Kneen was honoured as 3rd Star of the game.

Saskatoon play again immediately on Saturday night in Calgary against the Hitmen, puck drop is at 7pm.
