Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - Florida Everblades President & General Manager Craig Brush, along with Head Coach Gerry Fleming announced today that the club has agreed to terms with former National Hockey League defenseman Brad Brown.
Brown, a former 1st round draft pick taken 18th overall in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, joins the Everblades after spending the last two seasons in the American Hockey League with the Toronto Marlies. Brown, who turned 32 on December 27, skated in 36 games with the Marlies last season, registering three assists and 62 penalty minutes. In 2005-06, the native of Baie Verte, Newfoundland tallied four points (2g, 2a) and 93 PIM in 38 games with the Marlies.
Prior to that, Brown spent seven years in the NHL with the Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild and Buffalo Sabres. All told in his seven-year NHL career, Brown skated in 330 games, during which he totaled 29 points (2g, 27a) and 797 PIM. Brown also saw action in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games, all coming in 2003 with the Minnesota Wild. The following year Brown served as Minnesota's team captain.
"Adding a player of Brad's caliber to our roster is invaluable." Fleming said. "Brad is a big, strong steady defenseman who brings a lot of NHL experience to our team, experience that will be utilized by all, but especially by our younger players. He also brings with him strong leadership qualities both on an off the ice."
The 6-foot-3, 218 pound d-man's best stretch in the NHL came during his two seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1998-99 & 1999-00. Brown skated in 61 games, the most in a single season of his NHL career, in '98-'99, scoring one goal and adding seven assists, while amassing 187 PIM, also the most in a single season of his NHL career. Brown followed that up with 57 games in '99-'00 when he tallied his highest NHL total for points in a season with nine, all assists, and added 134 PIM.
Brown made his NHL debut with the Canadiens during the 1996-07 season, playing in eight games, while spending the remainder of the season in the AHL with Fredericton. Prior to turning pro, Brown played five seasons at the junior level in the Ontario Hockey League with North Bay and Barrie where he totaled 118 points in 267 games.
