Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
SAN ANGELO - Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings starting pitcher Eric Blackwell shut down the San Angelo Colts on Monday night at Foster Field, limiting them to just one run as the âWings took the first game of the series 8-1.
Entering the game second in the league in ERA, Blackwell improves his record to 7-3 while his ERA is lowered to 3.22.
The WhiteWings (41-28) now move two games behind the first-place San Angelo Colts (43-26).
The WhiteWings raced out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off of Colts starting pitcher Adam Kramer. Leading the game off with a double from newly signed Alexis Oliveras and then a single from Wilmer Pino, David Peralta then hit his team-leading 66th RBI to bring home Oliveras to give the âWings a 1-0 lead. One batter later, Leivi Ventura made the score 2-0 with an RBI single.
Ventura, in the third inning, knocked home his 16th home run of the year with a solo homerun over the centerfield wall to put the WhiteWings up 3-0.
The Colts responded in the bottom of the third when Cory Patton knocked in a run to cut the deficit to two, still trailing 3-1.
That was all the Colts could manage off of Blackwell, who kept the opposition scoreless the rest of the night.
From there, the WhiteWings put five more runs on the board, starting in the fifth inning with a leadoff triple from Oliveras. One batter later, Wilmer Pino hit a sacrifice fly out to centerfield to score Oliveras and give the âWings a 4-1 lead.
Alexis Hernandez hit his fourth homerun as a WhiteWing in the sixth inning, a solo homerun, extending the lead to 5-1 before a big eighth inning, in which the âWings put three runs across the plate.
Adam Kramer (3-2, 6.46 ERA) is credited with the loss for the Colts.
The series resumes Tuesday night as David Cross (2-4, 9.13 ERA) is expected to take the mound for the WhiteWings.
