Caps Take Two in Maui

Wailuku, HI - The Edmonton Capitals continue to soak up the sun and are heating up in their series against Maui Na Koa Ikaika. The Caps swept a double header Sunday with a 3 - 2 nail-biter and a then an 8 - 1 blowout and now Edmonton has won 5 of their 7 games so far in Hawaii.

In the opener, Caps starter Rory Shortell earned his team-leading ninth win of the season when he almost went the distance scattering 6 hits over six and two thirds innings of work. Shortell also helped his own cause with one of the hottest bats in the lineup finishing 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Edmonton's runs came courtesy of a Matt Rogelstad RBI single in the sixth, a sacrifice fly from Lou Santangelo and then Shortell's game-winning RBI single in the top of the seventh.

In the nightcap, the Capitals blew open a 1 - 0 game with all eight of their runs in the sixth inning. Pinch hitter Sean Brown came off the bench in the sixth inning and quickly contributed with a 2 for 2 inning including a lead-off single and a 2-run home run. Tom Collaro also went yard for the Caps. Brent Metheny padded his stats with a pair of RBI bringing his total to 58 ranking him ninth in the league in that category. Chad Blackwell earned the win giving up just 2 hits in 5 innings of work.

The Caps will play two more games on the island Monday and Tuesday to wrap up their marathon series against the Strong Warriors of Maui. Edmonton returns home for another edition of Fireworks Friday presented by Joe FM this Friday against the Yuma Scorpions. Game time is 7 o'clock and tickets start at just $10 when you buy in advance.
